2022 World Athletics Championships – Men's 800 Metres
The men's 800 metres at the 2022 World Athletics Championships was held at the Hayward Field in Eugene from 20 to 23 July 2022. Summary After missing the Olympics, defending champion Donavan Brazier was eliminated in the heats. World leader Max Burgin did not start. Aside from Olympic Champion Emmanuel Korir the rest of the Olympic and previous championships podium athletes did not make it to this event. In the final, Slimane Moula came off the break looking to take the lead, tangling elbows with Peter Bol en route. His lead lasted through the second turn when Marco Arop went by, then taking the bell at 52.02. Gabriel Tual moved behind him on the rail, while Wycliffe Kinyamal Kisasy went to the outside. Arop opened up a metre gap, Korir followed Kisasy as the four broke away a couple of metres from the other half of the field down the backstretch. Emmanuel Korir
Emmanuel Kipkurui Korir (born 15 June 1995) is a Kenyan middle-distance runner. He is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and 2022 World champion in the 800 metres. Korir won the silver medal in the event at the 2018 African Championships in Athletics. As of December 2024 he was ranked as the twelfth fastest athlete of all time over the 800 m, with a personal best of 1:42.05. Korir is a three-time Diamond League champion at the event. Career In 2013, athletics coach Brother Colm O’Connell, who was also based in Iten in Kenya, convinced Emmanuel Korir to switch from shorter sprints to the 400 metres. After 1:46.94 run in the finals of the 2016 Kenyan Championships, he was offered a scholarship at the University of Texas in El Paso, Texas in the USA. Yusuf Saad Kamel (), born Gregory Konchellah (born March 29, 1983) is a male former middle-distance runner who competed in the 800 metres and 1500 metres. Born in Narok, Kenya – the son of former two-time 800 metres World Champion Billy Konchellah – he represented Bahrain internationally. Kamel won the gold in the 1500 m and bronze in 800 m at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics held in Berlin. In early 2009 he stopped competing for Bahrain claiming unpaid salary and bonuses. He was willing to compete for Kenya, but his Kenyan passport was held by Bahraini officials. Without a passport, he was unable to compete in any competition. Several other Kenyan runners who took Bahraini citizenship have also left Bahrain and are vying to compete for Kenya.
