2021–22 West Virginia Mountaineers Men's Basketball Team
The 2021–22 West Virginia Mountaineers men's basketball team represented West Virginia University during the 2021–22 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Mountaineers were coached by Bob Huggins, in his 15th season as WVU's head coach, and played their home games at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, West Virginia as members of the Big 12 Conference. Previous season In a season limited due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Mountaineers finished the 2020–21 season 19–10, 11–6 in Big 12 play to finish in a tie for third place in the conference. They lost in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament to Oklahoma State. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament where they defeated Morehead State in the first round before losing to Syracuse in Second Round. Bob Huggins
Robert Edward Huggins (born September 21, 1953), nicknamed "Huggy Bear", is an American college basketball coach. He was the head coach at Walsh, Akron, Cincinnati, Kansas State, and West Virginia. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022. Huggins is the sixth men's college basketball coach with 900 or more career victories. He has been to 24 total NCAA tournaments, including 23 in the last 26 seasons. He has led his teams to nine Sweet Sixteen appearances, four Elite Eight appearances (3 at Cincinnati and 1 at West Virginia University), and two Final Four appearances (1992 with Cincinnati and 2010 with West Virginia). Derek Culver
Derek Culver (born May 24, 1998) is an American professional basketball player who last played for the Suwon KT Sonicboom of the Korean Basketball League (KBL). He played college basketball for the West Virginia Mountaineers. Early life Culver grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, which he called "a violent place, there’s really not a lot going on there." He attended Warren G. Harding High School in Warren, Ohio and was coached by Andy Vlajkovich. As a junior, he averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds per game, leading his team to a Division I district title and the regional semifinals. Culver was dismissed from the team midway through his senior season for undisclosed reasons. He played a postgraduate year at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire.
