The 2021–22 San Diego State Aztecs men's basketball team represented San Diego State University during the 2021–22 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Aztecs, led by fifth-year head coach Brian Dutcher, played their home games at Viejas Arena as members in the Mountain West Conference. They finished the season 23–9, 13–4 in Mountain West Play to finish in third place. As the No. 3 seed in the Mountain West tournament, they defeated Fresno State and Colorado State to advance to the championship game, where they lost to Boise State. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 8 seed in the Midwest Region, where they lost in the first round to Creighton. Brian Dutcher
Brian James Dutcher (born October 30, 1959) is an American college basketball coach who is the head coach of the San Diego State Aztecs men's basketball team at San Diego State University (SDSU). He was an assistant under head coach Steve Fisher (basketball), Steve Fisher with the Michigan Wolverines men's basketball, Michigan Wolverines and San Diego State, succeeding Fisher as the Aztecs' head coach upon his retirement in 2017. Jordan Schakel (born June 13, 1998) is an American professional basketball player for the Maine Celtics of the NBA G League. He played college basketball for the San Diego State Aztecs. Throughout his college career, Schakel scored 225 field goals from behind the 3-point line, ranking third in SDSU's history, and ended his college career with a total 1,034 points. He averaged 42.7 percent from behind the three-point line and 46.11 percent during his final year, ranking third nationally in the 2020–21 season. Schakel graduated with a degree in marketing from the SDSU Fowler College of Business and was named a Scholar Athlete in each semester. Matthew Mitchell Jr. (born March 18, 1999) is an American professional basketball player for Žalgiris Kaunas of the Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL) and the EuroLeague.
