2020–21 Melbourne United Season
The 2020–21 NBL season was the 38th season for Melbourne United in the NBL, and the 7th under the banner of Melbourne United. Roster Transactions Signings * Mitch McCarron, Shea Ili, Casey Prather, Jo Lual-Acuil and Sam Short all remained with the club after they previously signed multiple season contracts. Head Coach Dean Vickerman and assistant coach Ross McMains also remained with the club under their multiple season contracts. * On 15 July 2020, United signed their first new contract for the season. Jo Lual-Acuil
Joseph Lual-Acuil Jr. (born 26 April 1994) is a South Sudanese-Australian professional basketball player for Al Ittihad Alexandria of the Basketball Africa League He played college basketball for Neosho County Community College and Baylor University. Lual-Acuil had a record-breaking season in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) with Al Ahly Ly in 2024, in which he won MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and broke the league scoring record. Early life Lual-Acuil was born in Wau, South Sudan. Due to the civil war, he was relocated to a refugee camp in Uganda at the age of three where he lived for three years until his family moved to Australia. 2020–21 Cairns Taipans Season
The 2020–21 Cairns Taipans season was the 22nd season for the Cairns Taipans in the NBL, and their third and final season under the guidance of Head Coach Mike Kelly. Season summary After a successful campaign the season prior, the Taipans faced an early setback when it was announced that the redevelopment of the Cairns Convention Centre had been delayed and was unavailable for use until early February 2020, two months after the NBL announced the delayed season would start. After meeting with the Queensland Minister for Housing, Public Works and Sports Mick de Brenni, it was announced that the redevelopment timeline would not be adjusted for the Taipans. Dillon Stith
Dillon Stith (born February 20, 1992) is an American-Australian professional basketball player for the Kilsyth Cobras of the NBL1 South. He played college basketball for Saint Vincent College before moving to Australia in 2015 to play in the Big V. After one season with the Melbourne Tigers, he played four seasons for the McKinnon Cougars between 2016 and 2019, winning Big V MVPs in 2017 and 2019 and leading the Cougars to the championship in 2019. Samuel McDaniel (born 9 December 1995) is an Australian professional basketball player for the Brisbane Bullets of the National Basketball League (NBL). He played college basketball for Southeastern Community College and Louisiana–Monroe. Mason Peatling
Mason Peatling (born 31 March 1997) is an Australian professional basketball player for the Dandenong Rangers of the NBL1 South. He is also contracted with the Illawarra Hawks of the National Basketball League (NBL). He played college basketball for the Eastern Washington Eagles. David Barlow (basketball)
David Barlow (born 22 October 1983) is an Australian basketball player and coach. He currently serves as player-coach of the Sandringham Sabres in the NBL1 South. He also served as an assistant coach of Melbourne United in the National Basketball League (NBL) between 2023 and 2025. Barlow played professional basketball between 2003 and 2023. Yudai Baba
is a Japanese professional basketball player for Nagasaki Velca of the B.League. He played college basketball for the University of Tsukuba. Baba has been a member of the Japan men's national basketball team. High school career Baba played at Toyama Daiichi High School where his father, Toshiharu Baba, was the head coach at that time. Jackson Thomas White (born 5 August 1997) is an Australian professional basketball player for Bayern Munich of the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL). Fraser Ross McMains (born 1989) is an American-born New Zealand basketball coach. He is currently a player development coach with the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
