Mattamy Athletic Centre
Maple Leaf Gardens is a historic building located at the northwest corner of Carlton Street and Church Street in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The building was initially constructed in 1931 as an arena to host ice hockey games, though it has since been reconstructed for other uses. Today, Maple Leaf Gardens is a multi-purpose facility, with Loblaws occupying retail space on the lower floors and an arena for Toronto Metropolitan University, known as Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens, occupying the top level. 2019 Players' Championship
The 2019 Players' Championship was held from April 9 to 14 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, Ontario. It was the seventh Grand Slam event of the 2018–19 curling season. In the men's final, Brendan Bottcher defeated Kevin Koe 6–1. Team Bottcher was playing in their third straight Grand Slam final. In the women's final, Kerri Einarson defeated Anna Hasselborg 5–4 in an extra end. It was the second final that Team Einarson played in that season. 2021 Players' Championship
The 2021 Princess Auto Players' Championship was held April 20–25, 2021 at the Markin MacPhail Centre at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, Alberta. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada, it was announced that both the Players' Championship and the Champions Cup Grand Slam of Curling events would still be held in the 2020–21 curling season but would move to a centralized " bubble" (similar to that of the NHL as in Edmonton) at Canada Olympic Park alongside Curling Canada's national championships. All events will be held behind closed doors with no spectators. In the men's final, Team Bruce Mouat of Scotland won their second consecutive slam in the bubble, defeating Team Brad Gushue of St. John's 6–5. The Players' Championship is one of the final events on the World Curling Tour (WCT) and is a part of the Grand Slam of Curling. From 2016 to 2019, it was the penultimate slam of the curling season, and the last of the four "majors". The event was one of the original Grand Slam events when they were instituted in the 2001–02 season for men and for the 2006–07 season for women. History The event began as the "VO Cup" before the Grand Slam era in 1993, as part of the very first World Curling Tour season. The event was known as the VO Cup for two seasons before title sponsor Seagram's Distillery pulled out. Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules, and shuffleboard.
