2020–21 NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Season
The 2020–21 NCAA Division III men's ice hockey season began on October 30, 2020, and concluded on April 5, 2021. This was the 48th season of Division III college ice hockey. As a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, approximately half of the existing Division III schools did not participate in the 2020–21 season. Because this occurred for all sports across the country, the NCAA decided to cancel all Division III national tournaments for winter sports for the season. Regular season Due to the severe reduction in participants during the season, most conferences decided against holding tournaments. Only the NCHA, UCHC and WIAC named tournament champions. NCAA Division III
NCAA Division III (D-III) is the lowest division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States. D-III consists of athletic programs at colleges and universities that do not offer athletic scholarships to student-athletes. The NCAA's first split was into two divisions, the University and College Divisions, in 1956. The College Division was formed for smaller schools that did not have the resources of the major athletic programs across the country. The College Division split again in 1973 when the NCAA went to its current naming convention: Division I, Division II, and Division III. D-I and D-II schools are allowed to offer athletic scholarships, while D-III schools are not. D-III is the NCAA's largest division with around 450 member institutions, which are 80% private and 20% public. 2020–21 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Season
The 2020–21 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey season began on November 14, 2020, and concluded with the Frozen Four on April 10, 2021. Due to the cancellation of the previous year's tournament due to COVID-19 pandemic, this was the 73rd season in which an NCAA ice hockey championship was held, and was US college hockey's 127th year overall. Due to concerns related to the pandemic, the start of the season was delayed until what would have normally been the 8th week of play. Despite having to contend with contend with cancellations and delays due to the pandemic, the season was completed. Massachusetts won their first national championship, ending the 4-year run of NCHC teams. 2020–21 NCAA Division II Men's Ice Hockey Season
The 2020–21 NCAA Division II men's ice hockey season began on February 5, 2021 and concluded on March 14, 2021. This was the 39th season of second-tier college ice hockey. Regular season Due to COVID-19 concerns, the Northeast-10 Conference announced in July that all league activities would be suspended through the end of the 2020 calendar year. As all Division II programs played in the Northeast-10, this put the entire D-II season in jeopardy. Eventually all of the schools decided to cancel their seasons except for one.
