2019–20 Iona Gaels Men's Basketball Team
The 2019–20 Iona Gaels men's basketball team represented Iona College in the 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Gaels were to be led by 10th-year head coach Tim Cluess, but he never coached a game for health reasons. Associate head coach Tra Arnold took over the head coaching duties for this season. They played their home games at the Hynes Athletic Center in New Rochelle, New York as members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. They finished the season 12–17, 9–11 in MAAC play to finish in a tie for sixth place. As the No. 7 seed in the MAAC tournament, they defeated Canisius before losing to Saint Peter's in the quarterfinals. Following the season, Cluess stepped down as head coach of the Gaels due to health concerns. A day later, the school named former Louisville coach Rick Pitino the Gaels' new head coach. Hynes Athletic Center
The James P. Hynes Athletics Center is a 2,578-seat multi-purpose arena in New Rochelle, New York. It was built in 1974 and is home to the Iona University Gaels basketball and volleyball teams. In 2005, the building was renamed the Hynes Center, after being formerly known as the John A. Mulcahy Campus Events Center. Between the summer and fall of 2019, Hynes Athletics Center received a total of $6.5 million to expand and modernize the athletic center. 2019 MAAC Men's Basketball Tournament
The 2019 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament was the postseason men's basketball tournament for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference for the 2018–19 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. It was held from March 7–11, 2019 at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York. This marked the 20th time the tournament was played at the Times Union Center. No. 1 seed Iona defeated No. 6 seed Monmouth in the championship game 81–60 to win the conference's automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA tournament. With the win, Iona became the first MAAC team to win four consecutive MAAC Tournament championships, while also making this their MAAC-record leading seventh consecutive championship game appearance.
