2019–20 Chicago State Cougars Men's Basketball Team
The 2019–20 Chicago State Cougars men's basketball team represented Chicago State University in the 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Cougars were led by second-year head coach Lance Irvin. They played their home games at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center as members of the Western Athletic Conference. They finished the season 4–25, 0–14 in WAC play to finish in last place. They were set to be the No. 8 seed in the WAC tournament, however, the tournament was cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous season The 2018–19 Cougars finished the 2018–19 season 3–29, 0–16 in WAC play to finish in last place. They lost in the quarterfinals of the WAC tournament to New Mexico State. For the third time in four years, the Cougars had the worst average point margin in Division I (−25.5 points). Lance Irvin
Lance Irvin is an American college basketball coach, formerly head coach of the Chicago State Cougars men's basketball team. Playing career Irvin played college basketball at Colorado State during the 1987–88 season before transferring to Idaho where he played under Larry Eustachy from 1990 to 1991. Coaching career Serving as a graduate assistant under Eustachy at Idaho, Irvin got his first coaching opportunity. He then returned home to his native Chicago as an assistant coach at DePaul from 1992 to 1997, followed by an assistant coaching stint at Loyola-Chicago from 1998 to 2001 before reuniting with Eustachy at Iowa State for one season. In 2002, Irvin joined the coaching staff at Illinois State, and made subsequent stops at Texas A&M and Missouri under Melvin Watkins and Quin Snyder respectively. Lantz Arena
Groniger Arena, formerly known as Lantz Arena, is a 5,400-seat multi-purpose arena in Charleston, Illinois. It is home to the Eastern Illinois University (EIU) Panthers men's and women's basketball teams and to the women's volleyball team. Completed in 1967, the Lantz Arena Complex also houses the offices of the EIU athletic department, the Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse, and the Ray Padovan Swimming Pool. The building replaced the Health Education Building (now known as McAfee Gymnasium), which was built in 1938 and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The 2019–20 Eastern Illinois Panthers men's basketball team represented Eastern Illinois University during the 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Panthers, led by eighth-year head coach Jay Spoonhour, played their home games at Lantz Arena as members of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). They finished the season 17–15, 9–9 in OVC play, to finish in a tie for fifth place. Two human polls made up the 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball rankings, the AP Poll and the Coaches Poll, in addition to various publications' preseason polls. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the season ended March 12, 2020. As a result, the NCAA did not bestow a national championship. Instead, that title was de facto bestowed by one or more different polling agencies. There were two main weekly polls that began in the preseason—the AP Poll and the Coaches' Poll. Kansas, while having not officially made a claim, finished first in both polls.
