2019 Chicago Aldermanic Election
The 2019 Chicago aldermanic election took place in two rounds on February 26 and April 2, 2019, to elect 50 aldermen to the Chicago City Council. Each alderman represents one of Chicago's 50 wards. The elections are non-partisan and use a two-round system where the top two finishers compete in a second-round run-off if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in the first round. The elections were party of the 2019 Chicago elections, which included elections for Mayor, City Clerk, City Treasurer. Of the 50 incumbent aldermen 45 ran for re-election. Incumbents did not run in the 20th, 22nd, 25th, 39th, and 47th wards. Five aldermen ran unopposed: Brian Hopkins (2nd ward), Scott Waguespack (32nd), Gilbert Villegas (36th), Brendan Reilly (42nd), and Nicholas Sposato (38th). Byron Sigcho-Lopez
Byron Sigcho-Lopez (born July 7, 1983) is a Chicago politician and community activist. He is the alderman of Chicago's 25th ward, having taken office as a member of the Chicago City Council in May 2019. He won an open race to succeed outgoing alderman Daniel Solis in the 2019 Chicago aldermanic election. He is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. He was elected as 25th Ward Democratic Committeeperson in 2020. Early life and education Sigcho-Lopez was born and raised in Quito, Ecuador. Sigcho-Lopez earned a bachelor's degree from Cumberland University in Tennessee, and a Master's from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Chicago Sun-Times
The ''Chicago Sun-Times'' is a daily nonprofit newspaper published in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Since 2022, it is the flagship paper of Chicago Public Media, and has long held the second largest circulation among Chicago newspapers, after the ''Chicago Tribune''. Willie Cochran
Willie B. Cochran (born 1953) is an American politician and former Chicago Police Department officer. Cochran served as alderman of Chicago, Illinois' 20th Ward from 2007 until 2019. Early life, education and career Cochran was born one of ten children to Jasper and Gessner Cochran. Cochran graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1975 and received his MPA from Illinois Institute of Technology. Cochran served in the Chicago Police Department from 1977 until 2003, rising from patrol-man to sergeant. Aldermanic career Cochran was elected alderman for the 20th ward of the City of Chicago in 2007, unseating Arenda Troutman with 63% of the vote. Cochran was subsequently reelected in 2011 and 2015. Toni Foulkes
Toni Foulkes is the former alderman of Chicago's 16th ward, and was formerly the alderman for the 15th ward. She is African American. Aldermanic career In 2007, Foulkes was elected Chicago alderman for the 15th Ward, winning an open-race to succeed outgoing alderman Theodore Thomas. She was reelected in 2011. She was redistricted to the 16th Ward, where she won election in 2015. The race saw her running against incumbent 16th Ward alderman JoAnn Thompson, in addition to several other contenders. However, Thompson died two weeks before the initial round of voting in the election. Ultimately, the election saw her win a runoff election against Stephanie Coleman. Proco Joe Moreno
Proco Joe Moreno III (born May 19, 1972) is an American politician who served as alderman from the 1st ward in the Chicago City Council. He was appointed to replace Manny Flores on March 26, 2010. His term ended on May 20, 2019, after his loss to Daniel La Spata in the 2019 Chicago aldermanic elections. Chicago City Council Socialist Caucus
The Democratic Socialist Caucus of the Chicago City Council is a bloc of aldermen in the Chicago City Council. The block was unofficially organized as the Socialist Caucus in 2019, and later organized as a formal caucus with its current name in 2021. It currently has six members, out of the 50 aldermen that comprise the Council. Members of the caucus identify as democratic socialists. History The caucus was initially organized as the Socialist Caucus following the 2019 Chicago aldermanic election by six aldermen, all of whom were members of the Chicago chapter of Democratic Socialists of America. Chicago City Council Progressive Reform Caucus
The Progressive Reform Caucus of the Chicago City Council is a bloc of Alderman, aldermen in the Chicago City Council that was formed in 2013. Its stated mission statement is "creating a more just and equal Chicago, combating all forms of discrimination, and advancing public policies that offer genuine opportunity to all Chicagoans, especially those who have been left out of our society’s prosperity." As of the 2023–27 term, it had 19 members, out of the council's 50 aldermen. History The caucus was founded by nine aldermen in 2013, after having informally collaborated since 2012. Maria Hadden
Maria Elaine Hadden is an American politician and community activist from Chicago. She is a member of the Chicago City Council, serving as alderperson for the city's 49th ward. She won election to that office after defeating 28-year incumbent Joe Moore in the 2019 election, and was reelected in 2023. The 49th ward includes most of Rogers Park and portions of West Ridge. Matt Martin (Chicago Politician)
Matt Martin (born March 5, 1984) is an American politician who is currently serving as a member of Chicago City Council for the city's 47th ward. He won election as alderman in 2019 and was re-elected in 2023. The 47th ward includes all or parts of the North Center, Lincoln Square, Lakeview, and Uptown neighborhoods. James M. Gardiner (born April 17, 1976) is a Chicago politician and firefighter who serves as the alderman for the 45th ward in the Chicago City Council. Andre Vasquez (born May 21, 1979) is a Chicago politician, community organizer, and former rapper.
