The 2017–18 Wellington Phoenix FC season was the club's 11th season since its establishment in 2007. The club participated in the A-League for the 11th time, the FFA Cup for the fourth time, and fielded a reserves squad in the ISPS Handa Premiership for the fourth time. Wellington Phoenix Football Club is a professional association football, football club based in Wellington, New Zealand. It competes in the Australian A-League Men, under Professional sports league organization#Systems around the world, licence from Football Federation Australia. Phoenix entered the competition in the 2007–08 A-League, 2007–08 season after its formation in March 2007, by New Zealand Football to replace New Zealand Knights FC, New Zealand Knights as a New Zealand-based club in the Australian A-League competition. The New Zealand Football Championship () was a men's association football league at the top of the New Zealand league system. Founded in 2004, the New Zealand Football Championship was the successor to a myriad of short-lived football leagues in the country, including the National Soccer League, the National Summer Soccer League and the New Zealand Superclub League. The league was contested by ten teams in a franchise system. For sponsorship reasons, the competition was known as the ISPS Handa Men's Premiership. From the 2021 season, it was replaced by the New Zealand National League. The seasons used to run from October through to April, and consist of an eighteen-round regular season followed by a playoff series involving the four highest-placed teams, culminating in a Grand Final. James McGarry (footballer)
James Robert McGarry (born 9 April 1998) is a New Zealand professional footballer who plays as a left-back for Australian A-League Men club Brisbane Roar. Club career McGarry was scouted to attend the APFA academy in Christchurch from Dunedin in 2011. McGarry had professional trials with Chelsea and Sheffield United. When the academy relocated to Wellington to come under the banner of the Wellington Phoenix, Academy Director Jess Ibrom recruited McGarry to be part of the Wellington Phoenix Academy. Alex Rufer
Alex Arthur Rufer (born 12 June 1996) is a New Zealand professional footballer who captains and plays as a defensive midfielder for Wellington Phoenix in the A-League. Personal life Rufer is the son of former international New Zealand player Shane Rufer, and the nephew of Oceania Player of the Century Wynton Rufer. Marco Rossi (; born 30 September 1987) is an Italian footballer who plays as a defender for Serie D club Akragas. Club career In July 2009, Parma exchanged Rossi with Antonio Mirante of Sampdoria, signing a season-long loan. On 24 June 2011, he was signed by Cesena in a co-ownership deal for €2 million after he spent a year with Bari. After the deal, Alberto Galuppo returned to Parma in July 2011 for €1 million. Michael McGlinchey
Michael Ryan McGlinchey (born 7 January 1987) is a New Zealand former footballer who played as a midfielder. McGlinchey played youth football with Scottish club Celtic, where he made his professional debut. After spending time on loan to Dunfermline Athletic, he joined Central Coast Mariners in the A-League, where he made over 100 appearances.
