2017–18 Utah Valley Wolverines Men's Basketball Team
The 2017–18 Utah Valley Wolverines men's basketball team represented Utah Valley University in the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Wolverines, led by third-year head coach Mark Pope, played their home games at the UCCU Center in Orem, Utah as members of the Western Athletic Conference. They finished the season 23–11, 10–4 in WAC play to finish in second place. They defeated Cal State Bakersfield in the quarterfinals of the WAC tournament before losing in the semifinals to Grand Canyon. They were invited to the College Basketball Invitational where they defeated Eastern Washington in the first round before losing in the quarterfinals to San Francisco. Previous season The Wolverines finished the 2016–17 season 17–17, 6–8 in WAC play to finish in fifth place. Mark Pope
Mark Edward Pope (born September 11, 1972) is an American collegiate basketball coach and former player who is head men's basketball coach at the University of Kentucky, his alma matter. As a player, Pope played power forward and small forward. He was Pac-10 Freshman of the Year with the Washington Huskies and then transferred to Kentucky, where he served as a team captain of its 1996 NCAA national championship team. After college, Pope spent almost a decade playing professionally in the U.S. and internationally. Pope has held various coaching roles at the collegiate level. Prior to taking the helm at his alma mater, he was the head coach at Utah Valley from 2015 to 2019 and BYU from 2019 to 2024. Playing career Pope played at Newport High School in Bellevue, Washington. In college, he played two years for the Washington Huskies and earned Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors in 1992 after setting a freshman single-season school record with 8.1 rebounds per game. 2017 WAC Men's Basketball Tournament
The 2017 WAC men's basketball tournament is a postseason men's basketball tournament for the Western Athletic Conference. It will be held from March 9–11, 2017 at Orleans Arena in Paradise, Nevada. The winner of the tournament, New Mexico State, received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament with a 70-60 win over California State-Bakersfield. Seeds Grand Canyon was ineligible to participate in the conference tournament during its transition to Division I. The remaining seven teams will participate in the tournament. The top seed will receive a bye to the semifinals. Teams will be seeded by record within the conference, with a tiebreaker system to seed teams with identical conference records.
