2017–18 Incarnate Word Cardinals Men's Basketball Team
The 2017–18 Incarnate Word Cardinals men's basketball team represented the University of the Incarnate Word during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Cardinals were led by 12th-year head coach Ken Burmeister and played their home games at McDermott Convocation Center in San Antonio, Texas as members of the Southland Conference. The Cardinals finished the season 7–21, 2–16 in Southland play to finish in a tie for 11th place. They failed to qualify for the Southland tournament. The season marked the Cardinals' first full season as a Division I school after a four-year transition period from Division II to Division I and were thus eligible for postseason play. On March 6, 2018, the school announced that head coach Ken Burmeister would not return as head coach. Ken Burmeister
Ken Burmeister (June 3, 1947 – May 19, 2020) was an American college basketball coach. He was the head coach of the University of the Incarnate Word for 12 seasons from 2006 until 2018. Burmeister graduated from St. Mary's University, Texas, and served on the staff of Lute Olson at Iowa and Arizona from 1979 to 1986. Burmeister coached at University of Texas at San Antonio from 1986 to 1990 and led the team to its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1988, where they lost to Illinois. He served as an assistant coach at DePaul before taking over at Loyola (IL) in 1994. He posted a 40–71 record at Loyola and oversaw the team's move to Joseph J. Gentile Arena in 1996. Smithson Valley High School (commonly referred to as SVHS) is a public high school located in unincorporated Comal County, Texas, and is classified as a 5A school by the UIL. It is part of the Comal Independent School District and is one of the five out of seven traditional high schools within the district. The Murray State Racers men's basketball program represents Murray State University in intercollegiate men's basketball. Murray State is a member of the Missouri Valley Conference in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), having joined that conference in 2022 after 74 seasons in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Loyola Marymount Lions men's basketball team represents Loyola Marymount University in men's college basketball. The team competes in the West Coast Conference. The team has played its home game at Gersten Pavilion since 1981. Loyola Marymount's last appearance in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament was in 1990, where they advanced to the Elite Eight. They lost to eventual national champion UNLV.
