2017–18 Grand Canyon Antelopes Men's Basketball Team
The 2017–18 Grand Canyon Antelopes men's basketball team represented Grand Canyon University during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. They were led by head coach Dan Majerle in his fifth season at Grand Canyon. The Antelopes played their home games at the GCU Arena in Phoenix, Arizona as members of the Western Athletic Conference. They finished the season 22–12, 9–5 in WAC play to finish in third place. They defeated UMKC and Utah Valley to advance to the championship game of the WAC tournament where they lost to New Mexico. They were invited to the College Basketball Invitational where they lost in the first round to Mercer. The season marked the Antelopes' first full season as a Division I school after a four-year transition period from Division II to Division I. Dan Majerle
Daniel Lewis Majerle (; born September 9, 1965), also known by the nickname "Thunder Dan", is an American former professional basketball player and former coach of the Grand Canyon Antelopes. He played 14 years in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the Phoenix Suns, Miami Heat, and Cleveland Cavaliers. He won a bronze medal with the U.S. national team at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, and a gold medal at the 1994 FIBA World Championship. Early years Born and raised in Traverse City, Michigan, Majerle starred for Traverse City High School (now Central) and Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, where he played for four years with averages of 21.8 points and 8.9 rebounds a game. DeWayne Russell
DeWayne DeShawn Russell (born February 10, 1994) is an American professional basketball player for CB Breogán of the Spanish Liga ACB. College career Russell played his freshman season at Northern Arizona, averaging 14.4 points and 3.2 assists per game. Following the season he transferred to Grand Canyon. As a sophomore, he averaged 14.2 points and 3.9 assists per game, earning Second Team All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and WAC All-Newcomer Team honors. Russell averaged 9.7 points and 5.4 assists per game as a junior. On December 3, 2016, he scored a career-high 42 points, surpassing the program NCAA Division I record, in a 79–70 loss to Louisville. Canarias Basketball Academy is a basketball institute based in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. Its senior team currently plays in the Spanish Basketball Federation with their U18 and U16 teams. The junior team usually participates in the Euroleague Basketball Nike International Junior Tournament.
