2017 World Championships In Athletics – Women's Hammer Throw
The women's hammer throw at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Olympic Stadium on 5 and 7 August. Summary As the only woman to have thrown over 80 metres, world record holder Anita Włodarczyk was the clear favourite. While she was the first to throw over 70 metres in this competition, the next thrower, the home team's Sophie Hitchon threw better. By the end of the round, four more women threw better, the early leader was Włodarczyk's Polish teammate Malwina Kopron with a throw of 74.46 metres. In the second round, Wang Zheng jumped from second to first with a throw of 75.94 metres. The third Pole in the competition Joanna Fiodorow moved into third place with a throw of 73.02 metres. Anita Włodarczyk (; born 8 August 1985) is a Polish hammer thrower. She is the 2012, 2016 and 2020 Olympic champion, and the first woman in history to throw the hammer over 80 m; she currently holds the women's world record of 82.98 m. She is considered the greatest female hammer thrower of all time. She was voted the Polish Sports Personality of the Year in 2016 and received the Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta in 2021 for her outstanding achievements in sport. Jennifer Dahlgren Fitzner (born 21 April 1984) is a retired Argentine hammer thrower. Having spent much of her life in the United States, she competed as an amateur for the University of Georgia. She set the US collegiate hammer record and was the NCAA Outdoor champion in both 2006 and 2007. She is a three-time gold medallist at the South American Championships and won the bronze medal at the 2007 Pan American Games. Dahlgren has represented Argentina at the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics, as well as having competed at the World Championships in Athletics on three occasions. She first broke the South American record in the discipline in 2004 and has raised it several metres to her current best of 73.74 m.
