2017 VFL Women's Season
The 2017 VFL Women's season was the second season of the VFL Women's (VFLW). The season commenced on 6 May and concluded with the Grand Final on 24 September 2017. The competition was contested by ten clubs with two changes from the inaugural season – Knox were replaced by the Box Hill Hawks (operated by the Hawthorn Football Club); and Geelong Magpies were replaced by the Geelong Cats. Katie Brennan
Katie Brennan (born 2 October 1992) is an Australian rules footballer with and captain of the Richmond Football Club in the AFL Women's (AFLW). She previously played for and captained the Western Bulldogs from 2017 to 2019. Brennan was signed as a marquee player by the Bulldogs ahead of the inaugural AFL Women's season in 2017, and was their leading goalkicker in 2019. Junior and state-league football Brennan grew up on a large family property in Loganholme, a suburb 29 kilometres south-east of Brisbane but also spent periods of her youth living in England and Dubai. Docklands Stadium
Docklands Stadium, also currently known by naming rights sponsorship as Marvel Stadium, is a multi-purpose sports and entertainment stadium in the Docklands area of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Construction started in October 1997 and was completed in 2000 at a cost of A$460 million. The stadium features a retractable roof and the ground level seating can be converted from oval to rectangular configuration. Jasmine Garner (born 8 July 1994) is an Australian rules footballer with in the AFL Women's (AFLW) competition. Garner scored the AFLW's first-ever goal while playing for in the league's inaugural match in 2017. Early life Garner grew up supporting the Carlton Football Club, and Anthony Koutoufides was her favourite player. She started playing local football at the Yarraville Football Club at the age of eight, but later went through a stage of "not really enjoying playing footy anymore". Lily Mithen (born 2 March 1998) is an Australian rules footballer playing for the Melbourne Football Club in the AFL Women's competition. She was drafted by Melbourne with their tenth selection and seventy-third overall in the 2016 AFL Women's draft. She made her debut in the fifteen point loss to at Casey Fields in the opening round of the 2017 season. Richelle Cranston (born 28 September 1989) is an Australian rules footballer playing for the Western Bulldogs football Club in the AFL Women's (AFLW). She was drafted by Melbourne with their third selection and twenty-fourth overall in the 2016 AFL Women's draft. Brianna Davey
Brianna Iris Davey (born 13 January 1995) is an Australian footballer in both the Association football (soccer) and Australian rules football codes. In soccer, she was a goalkeeper for the national women's team the Matildas and played in the W-League for Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City. In 2016, she transitioned from soccer to Australian rules football, and was one of two initial marquee recruits for the Carlton Football Club in the AFL Women's (AFLW). Emma Michelle Kearney (born 24 September 1989) is an Australian rules footballer and former cricketer. A decorated midfielder in the AFL Women's (AFLW) competition, Kearney won the league's best and fairest award while playing for the in 2018 and has captained since 2019. Melissa Hickey (born 18 December 1984) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Melbourne Football Club and the Geelong Football Club in the AFL Women's (AFLW). She served as Geelong captain in the club's first two AFL Women's seasons. She also played in the Victorian Women's Football League/VFL Women's for eleven seasons, representing the St Albans Spurs, and Geelong. Kaitlyn Ashmore (born 8 November 1991) is an Australian rules footballer playing for the Hawthorn Football Club in the AFL Women's (AFLW). She has previously played for Brisbane and North Melbourne. Tanya Hetherington (born 14 April 1985) is a retired Australian rules footballer who played for the Greater Western Sydney Giants in the AFL Women's competition. Hetherington played state league football with Diamond Creek in the Victorian Women's Football League and later in the VFL Women's competition. In 2015 she suffered a major knee injury and went un-selected in the 2016 AFL Women's draft somewhat as a result. Nicola Stevens (born 24 March 1993) is an Australian rules footballer playing for St Kilda in the AFL Women's (AFLW). She previously played for Collingwood in 2017 and for Carlton in 2018–2022. Stevens was selected in the inaugural AFL Women's All-Australian team and was the inaugural Collingwood best and fairest winner during her only season with the Magpies in 2017.
