U Sports
U Sports (stylized as U SPORTS) is the national sport governing body of university sport in Canada, comprising the majority of degree-granting universities in the country. Its equivalent body for organized sports at colleges in Canada is the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Some institutions are members of both bodies for different sports. Its name until October 20, 2016, was Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS; french: Sport interuniversitaire canadien, SIC, links=no). On that date, the organization rebranded as "U Sports" in both official languages. The CBU Capers are the athletic teams that represent Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The 2018 U Sports Women's Final 8 Basketball Tournament was held March 8–11, 2018, in Regina, Saskatchewan. It was hosted by the University of Regina which had previously hosted the tournament in 1979, 2009, and 2013. The top-seeded and undefeated Carleton Ravens won their first Bronze Baby championship in program history, defeating the sixth-seeded Saskatchewan Huskies The University of Saskatchewan began in 1907 and has operated teams that compete with others since 1911. The term Huskie Athletics is defined as those student athletes from the University of Saskatchewan that compete in elite interuniversity .... Besides the accomplishment in itself, the win buoyed Carleton's basketball program, whose men's team had failed to appear in the final game for the first time in eight years. The 2016 CIS Women's Final 8 Basketball Tournament was held March 17–20, 2016, in Fredericton, New Brunswick. It was hosted by University of New Brunswick at the Richard J. Currie Centre. 2017 U Sports Men's Basketball Championship
The 2017 U Sports Men's Final 8 Basketball Tournament was held March 9–12, 2017 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was hosted by Dalhousie University at the Scotiabank Centre, the first time since 1987 that Dalhousie hosted the tournament. The Carleton Ravens won their seventh straight title, their 13th in 15 years, this time over the Ryerson Rams, who came into the tournament ranked number one in the country. The Dalhousie Tigers took their first ever bronze medal by defeating the McGill Redmen. Carleton extended its record number of men's national basketball championships, more than any top division college in Canada or the United States. All tournament games were shown live online via the U Sports website (using Stretch Internet). The semi-final and final games were on television's Sportsnet 360 and on its online service. The Bronze Baby trophy is awarded to the winning team of the U Sports women's basketball championship, contested among competing Canadian universities. The trophy features a figure that is a replica of a statue that was in the grounds of Dunfermline College of Physical Education in Scotland. The trophy was first donated in 1922 by the Students' Council of McGill University and awarded to the Ontario and Quebec conference champion of the Women's Interuniversity Athletic Union (WIAU). After the WIAU amalgamated with the Ontario Women's Interuniversity Athletic Union (OWIAA) in 1971, the trophy was retired and returned to McGill. The McGill Redbirds (formerly the McGill Redmen) and McGill Martlets are the varsity athletic teams that represent McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Team name According to Suzanne Morton, a professor of history at McGill, the name "McGill Redmen" was first adopted in 1927, initially intended to reflect James McGill's Scottish heritage and hair color.
