2017 FINA Men's Water Polo World League
The 2017 FINA Water Polo World League, FINA Men's Water Polo World League is the 16th edition of the annual men's international water polo tournament. It was played between November 2016 and June 2017 and opened to all men's water polo national teams. After participating in a preliminary round, eight teams qualify to play in a final tournament, called the Super Final from 20–25 June 2017. In the world league, there are specific rules that do not allow matches to end in a draw. If teams are level at the end of the 4th quarter of any world league match, the match will be decided by a penalty shootout. FINA Water Polo World League
The FINA Water Polo World League was an international water polo league organized by FINA, which plays annually, typically from winter through to June. League play featured continental tournaments for men and women, from which the top teams emerged to play in the championship tournament (the "Super Final") where the league champion team is crowned. Men's league play began in 2002, to capitalize on increased worldwide popularity of water polo created by the 2000 Olympic Games, especially in Europe, North America and Australia. The women’s league was added in 2004, based on growing interest in women's play. In October 2022, FINA announced that the tournament would be replaced with the FINA Water Polo World Cup and FINA Women's Water Polo World Cup from 2023 on. Filip Filipović ( sr-Cyrl, Филип Филиповић; born 2 May 1987) is a Serbian water polo player widely considered to be one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. He was a member of the Serbia men's national water polo teams that won bronze medals at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics and gold medals in 2016 and 2020. He also held the world title in 2009 and 2015 and the European title in 2003, 2006, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018. He was named ''Most Valuable Player'' at the 2011 World Championships. He was also voted as the male water polo "World Player of the Year" in 2011, 2014 and 2021 by the FINA magazine. Pietro Figlioli (born 29 May 1984) is an Italian water polo player. He competed for Australia at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics and for Italy in 2012 and 2016 and won two medals for Italy. He also won the world title in 2011. In 2012 he received the Gold Collar of Sporting Merit from the Italian Olympic Committee. Joseph Henry Kayes is a professional water polo player. He was born on 3 January 1991 in New Zealand. He is of Samoan descent through his mother, as both his maternal grandparents were born in Samoa. Kayes played for the NZ Senior Men's Water Polo team in 2008. In 2009 he went to Perth where he played for the Fremantle Mariners Men's Water Polo team which won the Australian National League. Aaron Younger (born 25 September 1991) is an Australian water polo player. He was born in Attadale, Western Australia and is tall. He made his debut for the Australian national team in 2009, that year, he was also part of the Australian Universities team that won the World University Games. In 2010, he signed for the Hungarian team Szeged. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he competed for the Australia men's national water polo team in the men's event - he was the youngest player on the team.
