2016–17 USC Upstate Spartans Men's Basketball Team
The 2016–17 USC Upstate Spartans men's basketball team represented the University of South Carolina Upstate during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Spartans, led by 15th-year head coach Eddie Payne, played their home games at the G. B. Hodge Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina as members of the Atlantic Sun Conference. They finished the season 17–16, 7–7 in 2016–17 Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball season, ASUN play to finish in a tie for fourth place. They lost in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Atlantic Sun men's basketball tournament, ASUN tournament to 2016–17 Kennesaw State Owls men's basketball team, Kennesaw State. They were invited to the 2017 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, CollegeInsider.com Tournament where they lost in the first round to 2016–17 Furman Paladins men's basketball team, Furman. Eddie Payne
Edward G. Payne (July 10, 1951 – July 7, 2021) was an American college basketball coach and the head men's basketball coach at the University of South Carolina Upstate. Payne led the USC Upstate Spartans through their first season of Division I (NCAA), Division I competition in 2007–2008. In 2012, he was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year. Prior to arriving at USC Upstate, Payne was a Div I head coach at Oregon State University and East Carolina University. Payne's son, Luke Payne, Luke, was one of his assistant coaches at USC Upstate from 2012 to 2015. Payne announced his retirement from USC Upstate on October 3, 2017, citing complications from ankle surgeries in the off-season.
