The 2016–17 season was Sunderland A.F.C., Sunderland's 138th season in existence, and their tenth consecutive season in the Premier League. Along with competing in the Premier League, the club also participated in the 2016–17 FA Cup, FA Cup and 2016–17 EFL Cup, EFL Cup. The season covered the period from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017. Sunderland () is a port city and metropolitan borough in Tyne and Wear, England. It is a port at the mouth of the River Wear on the North Sea, approximately south-east of Newcastle upon Tyne. It is the most populous settlement in the Wearside conurbation and the second most populous settlement in North East England after Newcastle. Sunderland was once known as 'the largest shipbuilding town in the world' and once made a quarter of all of the world's ships from its famous yards, which date back to 1346 on the River Wear. Bryan Josué Oviedo Jiménez (born 18 February 1990) is a Costa Rican professional footballer who plays as a left-back or left midfielder for Alajuelense and the Costa Rica national team. Billy Jones (born 24 March 1987) is an English former professional footballer who played as a right-back. Jones started his career at Crewe Alexandra and made his professional debut in October 2003 in a 3–0 win over Derby County. Maksymilian Stryjek (born 18 July 1996) is a Polish professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Ekstraklasa club Jagiellonia Białystok. He was a Poland youth international.
