2016–17 Men's FIH Hockey World League Semifinals
The 2016–17 Men's FIH Hockey World League Semifinals were the third stage of the 2016–17 edition of the Men's FIH Hockey World League. It took place in June and July 2017. A total of 20 teams competed in 2 events in this round of the tournament playing for 7 berths in the Final, to be played between 2 and 10 December 2017 in Bhubaneswar, India. This round also served as a qualifier for the 2018 Men's Hockey World Cup as the 10/11 highest placed teams apart from the host nation and the five continental champions qualified. Qualification 11 teams ranked between 1st and 11th in the FIH World Rankings current at the time of seeking entries for the competition qualified automatically, in addition to 8 teams qualified from Round 2 and one nation that did not meet ranking criteria and was exempt from Round 2 to host a Semifinal. Gonzalo Peillat
Gonzalo Peillat (born 12 August 1992) is a field hockey player who plays as a defender for Men's Feldhockey Bundesliga club Mannheimer HC. Born in Argentina, he represents Germany at international level. He previously played for his country of birth national team. In 2015, Peillat was awarded the FIH 2014 Rising Star of the Year. He ended his Argentina career with a total of 153 caps and 176 goals. He represented Argentina in field hockey from 2011 to 2018 before switching his allegiance to Germany as of 2022. Club career Peillat played for Club Ferrocarril Mitre in Argentina until the 2014 World Cup. After this tournament, he wanted to improve his play so he transferred to the Netherlands to play for HGC. Barry Middleton
Barry John Middleton (born 12 January 1984) is a British field hockey player. He played as a midfielder and forward for England and Great Britain and is the most capped British hockey player in history and captained his country for many years. Middleton was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2020 New Year Honours for services to hockey. Faizal bin Saari (born 13 January 1991) is a Malaysian field hockey player. He currently plays as a striker for Terengganu Hockey Team. Career Club Faizal started his Malaysia Hockey League career with Terengganu Hockey Team. He was the 2011 league top goalscorer with 19 goals. In June 2011, Faizal started his overseas career along with another Malaysian Sukri Mutalib. They were selected by the Southern Hotshots team for the Australian Hockey League. Samuel Ian Ward (born 24 December 1990), known as Sam Ward, is an English field hockey player who plays as a forward for Old Georgians and the England and Great Britain national teams. He competed at three Olympic Games. Biography Ward played club hockey Leicester, Beeston (3 spells), Loughborough Students. It was while at Beeston that he played for England in the 2014 Men's Hockey Champions Trophy. He left Beeston for Holcombe and was selected for Great Britain at the 2016 Olympic Games. Christopher Griffiths (born 3 September 1990), known as Chris Griffiths, is an English field hockey player who plays as a forward for Old Georgians and the England and Great Britain national teams. He competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Biography Griffiths joined East Grinstead in May 2014 ahead of the 2014–15 season, having previously played for and captained Loughborough Students.
