2016–17 Long Beach State 49ers Men's Basketball Team
The 2016–17 Long Beach State 49ers men's basketball team represented California State University, Long Beach during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The 49ers were led by tenth-year head coach Dan Monson and played their home games at the Walter Pyramid as members of the Big West Conference. They finished the season 15–19, 9–7 in Big West play to finish in fourth place. They defeated Hawaii in the quarterfinals of the Big West tournament before losing to UC Irvine in the semifinals. Previous season The 49ers finished the 2015–16 season 20–15, 12–4 in Big West play to finish in third place. They defeated UC Riverside and UC Irvine to advance to the championship game of the Big West tournament where they lost to Hawaii. Dan Monson
Daniel Lloyd Monson (born October 6, 1961) is an American college basketball coach who is currently the head coach at Eastern Washington. He was previously the head coach at Long Beach State for 17 seasons. He was also the head coach at Minnesota for over seven seasons, reaching postseason play five times. Before coaching the Gophers, he was the head coach at Gonzaga for two seasons, leading the team on an improbable run to the Elite Eight during his last season. Early years Monson is the son of college basketball coach Don Monson, and spent most of his early years in eastern Washington, where his father was a successful high school head coach in Cheney and Pasco for 18 seasons. Nick Faust
Nicholas David Jordan Faust (born February 25, 1993) is an American professional basketball player for Pioneros de Los Mochis for the Circuito de Baloncesto de la Costa del Pacífico (CIBACOPA). He played college basketball for Maryland Terrapins and the Long Beach State 49ers. Faust was the leading scorer on the Petro de Luanda team that won the BAL championship in 2024. College career He played three seasons for the University of Maryland. In his first season he was named to the All-Freshman Team of the Atlantic Coast Conference. He averaged 9.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2 assists per game as a junior and spent the latter half of the season as a bench player. In 2014 he transferred to Long Beach State after originally committing to Oregon State, and sat out a redshirt year per NCAA regulations.
