2016–17 Aston Villa F.C. Season
The 2016–17 EFL Championship season was Aston Villa's 142nd season 2016–17 in English football, in English football. It was Aston Villa F.C., the club's first season in the EFL Championship, Football League Championship following their relegation from the Premier League 2015–16 Premier League, last season. It was also their first season in EFL Championship, the second tier of English football since the formation of the Premier League. On 2 June 2016, Roberto Di Matteo was appointed the manager of the newly relegated Championship club, working under the new chairman Tony Xia. Di Matteo's former Chelsea teammate Steve Clarke was appointed as his assistant on the same day. Xia also appointed Keith Wyness as CEO. Aaron Tshibola (born 2 January 1995) is a professional footballer who plays as a midfielder who plays for Greek Super League club Levadiakos. Born in England, he represents DR Congo at internatioanl level. Born in London, he came through the youth ranks at Reading before moving to Aston Villa in 2016. Tommy Elphick (born 7 September 1987) is an English former professional footballer who played as a centre-back and currently an assistant manager at Premier League club AFC Bournemouth. Colin Calderwood (born 20 January 1965) is a Scottish professional football manager and former player. As a player, he was a centre-back who played in the Premier League for Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa and in the Football League for Mansfield Town, Swindon Town, Nottingham Forest and Notts County.
