2016 European Athletics Championships – Women's Half Marathon
The women's half marathon at the 2016 European Athletics Championships took place at the Olympic Stadium (Amsterdam), Olympic Stadium on 10 July. Due to 2016 being an Olympic year the marathon was replaced by a half marathon. It was the first time that the half marathon had been run during the European Championships. Violah Jepchumba (born 23 October 1990) is a Kenyan-born Bahraini long-distance runner who competes in road running events up to the half marathon distance. She is the current Asian Record holder in the half-marathon (established 1 April 2017) with a winning time of 1:05:22. In 2016, at Praha, she ran a personal best of 1:05:51, which then ranked her as the third fastest woman ever. She began competing internationally in 2014 and was runner-up in her first European outing at the Parelloop. That year she won a series of lower-level German road races, including the Paderborner Osterlauf, as well as the Route du Vin Half Marathon in Luxembourg. Agnieszka Mierzejewska, née Ciołek (born 22 October 1985 in Zaklików) is a Polish long-distance runner. At the 2016 European Athletics Championships she finished 9th in the women's half marathon. She won the 2016 Polish national championship in the marathon, but came two minutes and four sections shy of selection to compete in the 2016 Olympics. Esma Aydemir (born January 1, 1992, in Karakeçili, Kırıkkale Province, Turkey) is a Turkish middle distance and long-distance runner competing mostly in the 1500 m, 3000 m, 5000 m, 10,000 m and marathon events. She began with running in Karakeçili town of Kırıkkale Province in 2005, discovered by Mehmet Kiper, national athlete and a physical education teacher in Antalya.
