2014 Renfrew County Municipal Elections
Elections were held in Renfrew County, Ontario on October 27, 2014 in conjunction with municipal elections across the province. Renfrew County Council County council has no direct elections; its membership is made up of the mayors and reeves of the lower-tier municipalities of the county, including the reeves (not the mayors) or Arnprior, Deep River, Laurentian Valley, Renfrew and Whitewater Region. Therefore, elections in those municipalities determine the members of council for the new term. Renfrew County, Ontario
Renfrew County is a county and census division in the Canadian province of Ontario. It straddles the west bank of the Ottawa River. There are 17 municipalities in the county. Its county seat is Pembroke, which is geographically within the county but administered independently. History Bathurst District When Carleton County was withdrawn from Bathurst District in 1838, Renfrew County was severed from part of the remaining Lanark County, but the two remained united for electoral purposes. Horton, Ontario
Horton is a township in eastern Ontario, Canada, at the confluence of the Bonnechere River and the Ottawa River in Renfrew County. The Town of Renfrew was originally part of Horton Township. Communities The township comprises the communities of Castleford, Castleford Station, Cotieville, Fergusons Beach, Goshen, Lochwinnoch (partially), Mayhew and Thompson Hill. Castleford In the 1820s, Lt. Christopher James Bell settled his land grant and named the area Castleford after his birthplace in West Yorkshire, England. A post office opened at Castleford in 1832, but the town was renamed Warnock in 1889 when the Castleford designation was given to the CPR station at Castleford Station. Renfrew is a town on the Bonnechere River in Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. Located one hour west of Ottawa in Eastern Ontario, Renfrew is the fourth largest town in the county after Petawawa, Pembroke and Arnprior. The town is a small transportation hub connecting Highway 60 and Highway 132 with the Trans-Canada Highway. Renfrew is also known historically for its role in the formation of the National Hockey League. It lies about 5 kilometres from the Quebec border, about 10 kilometres by road. Petawawa
Petawawa ( ) is a town located in the eastern portion of Southern Ontario, Canada. Situated in the Ottawa Valley, with a population of 18,160 (2021 Census), Petawawa is the most populous municipality in Renfrew County. History The earliest settlement in the Petawawa area was inhabited by the Algonquin First Nation. The name of Petawawa originates from a local Algonquin language word, ''biidaawewe'', meaning "where one hears a noise like this". The original spelling of the name of the town was ''Petewawa'' and while there are no sources showing when it officially changed to Petawawa, Privy Council documents indicate the name Petawawa being formally used in correspondence as early as 27 March 1907. North Algona Wilberforce is a township municipality in Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. It has a population of 3,111. The township was formed in 1999 when the North Algona and Wilberforce townships were amalgamated. Wilberforce Township was named in 1851, to honour William Wilberforce. McNab/Braeside
McNab/Braeside is a township in eastern Ontario, Canada, on the south shore of Chats Lake (part of the Ottawa River), straddling the lower Madawaska River in Renfrew County. The township was created on January 1, 1998, when the Village of Braeside amalgamated with McNab Township. History McNab township was created in 1825, comprising roughly 80,000 acres of unsettled land, covering the current Town of Arnprior and Township of McNab/Braeside. It was granted by the government ("Family Compact") to Archibald 13th Laird of McNab (1779-1860), who had fled from his debts in Scotland. He promised to settle it with Highland clansmen, and the first group of eighty-four settlers arrived the same year, 1825. McNab ruled with an iron fist over the Scottish settlers. Madawaska Valley
The Township of Madawaska Valley is a township municipality in Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. It was formed in 2001 through the amalgamation of the village of Barry's Bay and the townships of Radcliffe and Sherwood Jones & Burns. The area is also a culturally significant location for the Polish diaspora in Canada, and is known by members of the community as Kaszuby (English ''Kashubia),'' after a region in Northern Poland that many early settlers of the region hailed from. Its largest population centre is Barry's Bay, and it also includes the settlements of Combermere and Wilno, the latter of which being named for the city of Vilnius (Polish ''Wilno''), a city in modern Lithuania that has historically possessed a large Polish population and significant cultural ties to Poland. Laurentian Valley is a township municipality in Renfrew County in eastern Ontario, Canada. It borders on the Ottawa River, the city of Pembroke and the town of Petawawa. This township was created on January 1, 2000, from the former townships of Stafford-Pembroke and Alice and Fraser. Laurentian Hills
Laurentian Hills is a municipality in Eastern Ontario, Canada, on the Ottawa River in Renfrew County. It surrounds (by land) Deep River on the Ontario side of the river. The municipality was formed on January 1, 2000, when the United Townships of Rolph, Buchanan, Wylie and McKay and the Village of Chalk River were merged. The town was home to the Nuclear Power Demonstration nuclear power plant. The prototype nuclear power plant was operational from 1962 to 1987 and has since then been shut down, awaiting permanent disposal of its radioactive nuclear components. Head, Clara And Maria
Head, Clara and Maria, officially the United Townships of Head, Clara and Maria, is a municipality and incorporated township in Renfrew County in eastern Ontario, Canada, It is on the Ottawa River and on the northern edge of Algonquin Park. Virtually all the communities (Deux-Rivières, Bissett Creek, Stonecliffe and Mackey) and activities are along Highway 17; the rest of the township is largely crown land, which is mostly wilderness. 2014 Ontario Municipal Elections
The 2014 municipal elections in Ontario were held on October 27, 2014. Voters in the province of Ontario elected mayors, councillors, school board trustees and all other elected officials in all of the List of municipalities in Ontario, province's municipalities. Electoral period Submissions for candidate nominations were first accepted on 1 January 2014, at which time the campaign period began. The last day for acceptance of nominations or candidacy withdrawal was 12 September 2014. From 1978 until 2006 the second Monday of November was the fixed date.
