2014 European Athletics Championships – Women's 10,000 Metres
The women's 10000 metres at the 2014 European Athletics Championships took place at the Letzigrund on 12 August. The event was run as a straight final. In a slow run, tactical race, 40-year-old British athlete Joanne Pavey, Jo Pavey won the gold medal, timing her push with 400 metres to go, becoming the oldest European athletics champion in the history of the event. French contender Clémence Calvin, who had finally animated the race with three laps remaining, and compatriot Laila Traby completed the podium. 10000 Metres
The 10,000 metres or the 10,000-metre run is a common long-distance track running event. The event is part of the athletics programme at the Olympic Games and the World Athletics Championships, and is common at championship-level events. The race consists of 25 laps around an Olympic-sized 400 m track. It is less commonly held at track and field meetings due to its duration. The 10,000-metre track race is usually distinguished from its road running counterpart, the 10K run, by referring to the distance in metres rather than kilometres. Sally Jepkosgei Kipyego (born 19 December 1985) is a Kenyan-born American long- and middle-distance runner. She was the silver medalist in the 10,000 metres at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics and the silver medalist in the same race at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. She has a personal record of 30:38.35 minutes for that event and her 5000 metres best of 14:30.42 minutes makes her the second fastest Kenyan woman for the distance. Krisztina Papp (born 17 December 1982) is a Hungarian long-distance runner. She is the national indoor record holder over 5000 m. She was selected as Female Athlete of the Year by the Hungarian Athletics Association in 2006, 2009 and 2010. Papp began her international career as a junior with appearances at the 2000 World Junior Championships in Athletics and the 2001 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. Joanne Marie Pavey MBE (née Davis, born 20 September 1973) is a British retired long-distance runner. A World, European and Commonwealth medallist, Pavey won the 10,000 m gold medal at the 2014 European Championships as the oldest female European champion to date.
