2013 World Championships In Athletics – Women's 1500 Metres
The women's 1500 metres at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Luzhniki Stadium on the 11th, 13th and 15th of August. From the start of the final, two Americans, defending champion Jennifer Simpson and super high-schooler Mary Cain bracketed the field and closed to fill in the front of the pack. But most of the pack stayed in close order formation throughout with much jockeying for position and flying elbows. Cain tried to stay on the curb but kept getting moved back as new suitors moved forward then fell back. Zoe Buckman came forward then went to the curb to suffer the same fate ahead of Cain. Throughout world leader Abeba Aregawi hovered near the front but not passing Simpson. With 300 to go, Aregawi went around Simpson and made a break for it. Abeba Aregawi Gebretsadik (Amharic: አበባ አረጋዊ; born 5 July 1990) is an Ethiopian-born Swedish middle-distance runner who specialised in the 1500 metres, 1,500 metres. She won the silver medal in the Athletics at the 2012 Summer Olympics – Women's 1500 metres, 1,500 m at the 2012 Summer Olympics and a gold medal at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics – Women's 1500 metres, World Championships in 2013. Tatyana Ivanovna Tomashova () (born 1 July 1975 in Perm) is a former Russian distance runner. Career At the 2000 Summer Olympics, she competed in the 5000 metres but participated in shorter races thereafter, mainly in the 1500 metres. She is a double world champion and single Olympic silver medallist in this event. On 31 July 2008, Tomashova was suspended by the IAAF, along with six other Russian track and field athletes, for doping offences. Tatyana Vasilyevna Kazankina (; born 17 December 1951 in Petrovsk, Soviet Union) is a Russian former runner who set seven world records and won a total of three gold medals at the Olympic Games for the Soviet Union. She was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour and the title ''Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR'' in 1976. Kazankina competed for VSS Burevestnik. Letitia Vriesde
Letitia Alma Vriesde (born 5 October 1964) is a former track and field athlete from Suriname, who specialised in the 800 metres but was also successful over 1500 metres. She is the first (and to date, only) sportsperson from Suriname to compete at five Olympic Games. She won a silver medal at the 1995 World Championships and a bronze medal at the 2001 World Championships. Vriesde holds the South American records for the 800 metres, 1000 metres and 1500 metres (indoors and outdoors) and also for the 3000 metres (indoors). Mary Teresa Slaney (formerly Tabb, née Decker, born August 4, 1958) is an American retired middle-distance and long-distance runner.
