100 Metres
The 100 metres, or 100-meter dash, is a sprint race in track and field competitions. The shortest common outdoor running distance, the dash is one of the most popular and prestigious events in the sport of athletics. It has been contested at the Summer Olympics since 1896 for men and since 1928 for women. The inaugural World Championships were in 1983. On an outdoor 400-metre running track, the 100 m is held on the home straight, with the start usually being set on an extension to make it a straight-line race. There are three instructions given to the runners immediately before and at the beginning of the race: "on your marks", "set", and the firing of the starter's pistol. The runners move to the starting blocks when they hear the 'on your marks' instruction. The following instruction, to adopt the 'set' position, allows them to adopt a more efficient starting posture and isometrically preload their muscles: this will help them to start faster. Virginia McLachlan (born September 17, 1992) is a Canadian Paralympic sprinter who won 2 bronze medals in women's T35 200 m and 100 m run at the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Vanessa Low
Vanessa Low (born 17 July 1990) is a German-born Australian Paralympian, Paralympic Track and field, athlete competing in T42 (classification), T42 Sprint (running), sprint and long jump events. Born in East Germany, she gained Australian nationality in June 2017. In 2016, Low was the only actively competing female track athlete with two above-knee amputations of her legs. Despite the location of these amputations and despite her having to compete with athletes having one fully functional leg, she successfully made it to the finals of all of her sprint and long jump competitions at both the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London and the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Rio. Jana Schmidt (born 13 December 1972) is a Paralympian athlete from Germany competing mainly in category T42 track and field events. Martina Caironi (born 13 September 1989) is an Italian Paralympic athletics, Paralympic athlete. She competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics and 2016 Summer Paralympics. Chen Junefi (born 15 May 1992) is a Paralympian athlete from China competing mainly in T38 classification sprint events. Chen represented her country at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, where she won three medals; a gold in the 100m sprint and silvers in both the 200m sprint and the women's 4 x 100m relay (T35-38). Verônica Silva Hipólito (born 2 June 1996) is a para-Track and field, athlete from Brazil competing mainly in category T37 (classification), T37 sprint events. She competed as an able-bodied athlete before a stroke in 2011 left her with permanent damage to the right side of her body. In 2013, she discovered that she was eligible to compete in Paralympic sports and that year represented Brazil at the 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships. Sophie Megan Hahn (born 23 January 1997) is a parasport athlete from England competing mainly in T38 sprint events. In 2013, she qualified for the 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships, selected for the T38 100m and 200m. She took the gold in the 100m sprint, setting a new world record. Johanna Benson
Johanna Benson (born 17 February 1990) is a Paralympian athlete from Walvis Bay, Namibia. She competes in T37 long jump and sprint events and at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London she won the women's 200 metres race in her classification. Her 200 metres success in London made her the first Paralympic gold medalist in Namibia's history. Personal history Benson was born in Walvis Bay, South West Africa (now Namibia) in 1990.
