Competition format In the mass start, all biathletes start at the same time and the first across the finish line wins. In this competition, the distance is skied over five laps; there are four bouts of shooting (two prone, two standing, in that order) with the first shooting bout being at the lane corresponding to your bib (Bib #10 shoots at lane #10 regardless of position in race.) with rest of the shooting bouts being at the lane in the position they arrived (Arrive at the lane in fifth place, you shoot at lane five.). The 2012–13 Biathlon World Cup was a multi-race tournament over a season of biathlon, organised by the International Biathlon Union. Kaisa Mäkäräinen
Kaisa Leena Mäkäräinen (born 11 January 1983) is a Finnish former world-champion and 3-time world-cup-winning biathlete, who currently competes for Kontiolahden Urheilijat. Outside sports, Mäkäräinen is currently studying to be a Physics teacher at the University of Eastern Finland in Joensuu. Her team coach is Jonne Kähkönen, while Jarmo Punkkinen is her ski coach. Career Mäkäräinen was originally a cross-country skier and focused on this until the age of twenty. She started training for the biathlon in 2003. In 2004, she made the Finnish National Team. 2005 saw Mäkäräinen compete at the Biathlon World Championships for the first time. Her best placings in the Biathlon World Championships have occurred at the 2007 World Championships in Antholz-Anterselva, where she placed eighth in the individual 15 and seventh in the mass start events. Selina Gasparin (born 3 April 1984) is a Swiss former biathlete. Biography She won a silver medal in the Individual at 2014 Winter Olympics. Gasparin competed in the 2010 Winter Olympics for Switzerland. Her best performance was 40th in the individual. She also finished 56th in the sprint and 48th in the pursuit. As of February 2013, her best performance at the Biathlon World Championships was 10th, as part of the 2012 Swiss mixed relay team. Her best individual performance is 12th in the 2012 sprint. Olga Gennadyevna Vilukhina (; born 22 March 1988) is a former Russian biathlete, who was competing on the World Cup circuit since the 2008–09 season. Andrea Henkel
Andrea Burke, née Henkel (born 10 December 1977) is a retired German professional biathlete and the younger sister of Manuela Henkel, a successful cross-country skier. She trained at SV Großbreitenbach. Andrea Henkel started out as a cross-country skier but later specialised in biathlon when women's biathlon became an Olympic sport. Since the 1998/99 season, she was a regular member of the German team in the Biathlon World Cup. After several top-ten results, she could win her first World Cup event in 1999, her second year. She was most successful in the 2006/07 season, which she finished first in the overall standings. Henkel has won four Olympic medals: one gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics in the 15 km individual, and a gold (2002), silver (2006) and bronze (2010) medal in relay competitions.
