2012 Swiss Referendums
Twelve national referendums were held in Switzerland during 2012. On 11 March, voters across the country were asked five questions on employment leave, second houses, building society savings, the Fixed Book Price Agreement and gambling revenues. On 17 June, there were three questions on healthcare, foreign policy and home buying. On 23 September, there were three on a smoking ban, secure housing in old age and music lessons at school. A final referendum was held on 25 November on the Animal Diseases Act. Background Swiss law says that any issue can be put to a referendum if it attains 100,000 signatures to do so. The rules further state that for a measure to be nationally adopted into the constitution it has to get a majority of both votes and the number cantons that support the issue. Otto Stich
Otto Anton Stich (10 January 1927 – 13 September 2012) was a Swiss professor and politician. He served as a member of the Swiss Federal Council from 1984 to 1995 and held the President of the Swiss Confederation, Swiss presidency in 1988 and 1994. Early life and education Stich was born in Basel, Basel, Switzerland to Otto and Rosa Stich (née Gunzinger). His father was a mechanic and he had a modest upbringing in Dornach, where he attended middle and high school. He studied at the University of Basel and graduated with a diploma in Economics. In 1953, he became a diplomed teacher, in 1955 he completed his doctorate of philosophy in Political science. He then taught at the vocational school in Basel, the subjects German, Economics and Political Science. Leon Schlumpf
Leon Schlumpf (3 February 1925 – 7 July 2012) was a Swiss politician and a member of the Swiss Federal Council (1979–1987). Schlumpf was born in Felsberg. He was elected to the Federal Council on 5 December 1979 as a member of the Swiss People's Party (SVP) from the Canton of Graubünden (Grisons). He subsequently handed over office on 31 December 1987. During his time in office, he held the Federal Department of Transport, Communications and Energy and was President of the Confederation in 1984. Schlumpf died on 7 July 2012 in Chur, aged 87. Friedhelm Konietzka
Friedhelm "Timo" Konietzka (2 August 1938 – 12 March 2012) was a German professional football player and manager who played as a striker. He earned his nickname "Timo" due to a supposed resemblance to the Soviet commander Semyon Timoshenko. Biography Konietzka was born in Lünen, Province of Westphalia, and started his football career at his hometown club VfB 08 Lünen. In his youth (for five years since the age of 14) he worked in a coal mine. Max Merkel, coach of Borussia Dortmund at that time, discovered his talent when Konietzka was 20 and included him in the Dortmund squad. Together with fellow striker Jürgen Schütz, he formed the most dangerous attack of the Oberliga West. Konietzka played a total of 100 Bundesliga matches for Borussia Dortmund and TSV 1860 Munich and scored 72 goals, being the second best scorer of the league from 1964 to 1966 in the process.
