2012 World's Strongest Man
The 2012 World's Strongest Man was the 35th edition of World's Strongest Man. The event was held on the grounds of the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, California, US. The event was sponsored by MET-Rx. The qualifying heats were held from September 24–27, and the finals took place Sept. 30 & Oct. 1, 2012. The winner was Žydrūnas Savickas, it was his third WSM title. Vytautas Lalas of Lithuania was second, and Iceland's Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson was third. In the qualifying heats, Derek Poundstone set a new world record in the Giant Dumbbell press event by pressing a dumbbell overhead for 11 repetitions, and Vytautas Lalas set a new strongman squat (exercise), squat world record by squatting for 11 repetitions. In the finals, Žydrūnas Savickas set a new World Log Lift Championships, Log Lift for Max Weight world record with a lift of . Commerce Casino
Commerce Casino, officially the Commerce Casino & Hotel is a cardroom located in the Los Angeles suburb of Commerce. With over 240 tables on site, Commerce Casino is the largest cardroom in the world. Established in 1983, the casino accounted for 38% of Commerce's tax revenues for the 2006-2007 fiscal year. , the casino was providing $22 million a year in licensing fees to the city. Chris Gearing (born 11 December 1986) is a British strongman competitor, notable for having won the England's Strongest Man title and having competed at the World's Strongest Man. Biography Chris Gearing was born in Chatham, Kent. He was athletic as a child and at the age of 13 started training in Shot Put going on to compete in the World Under 18s, World Juniors, European Juniors, and winning a silver and a bronze at the Commonwealth Games under 19's in Australia. When he was 23 he began powerlifting and won British titles and came second in the World Junior 140 kg+ category. The next year he began training specifically for Strongman. Mikhail Viktorovich Koklyaev (, born 17 December 1978) is a Russian weightlifter, powerlifter, strongman and boxer. He is widely regarded as one of the most versatile strength athletes of all time. Strongman Koklyaev has placed third place at the Arnold Strongman Classic in 2006, 2008 and 2013, as well as second in 2009. Martin Wildauer (born 27 November 1987) is an Austrian strongman competitor and entrant to the World's Strongest Man competition. He is a competitor of the well-known Strongman Champions League and the Giants Live competitions. Edward Stephen Hall (born 15 January 1988) is an English media personality, retired strongman, and current mixed martial artist. He is best known for his then world-record setting deadlift. Nick Best (born November 3, 1968) is an American strongman and powerlifter. Powerlifting Prior to competing in strongman, Best won the USAPL National Powerlifting Championships in the 125 kg class in 1996 and 1997, as well as the WDFPF World Powerlifting Championships in 1996.
