2011–12 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl Season
The 2011–12 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl season was the franchise's 52nd season of play in professional ice hockey in Russia. It was supposed to be its fourth season in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). The season was scheduled to start on 8 September 2011. However, on 7 September, while traveling to their season opener, the team's plane crashed, killing 44 people, including 25 roster players, and 11 members of the team staff. Alexander Galimov survived the initial impact of the crash with severe injuries, but died on 12 September. Another roster player, Maxim Zyuzyakin, did not travel with the team on the plane. As a consequence, the league cancelled the 7 September Opening Cup game between Salavat Yulaev and Atlant already in progress, postponing the opening of the KHL season until 12 September. Lokomotiv Yaroslavl
Hockey Club Lokomotiv (, ), also known as Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, is a professional ice hockey club based in Yaroslavl, Russia. It is a member of the Tarasov Division in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). The name of the team is derived from its owner, Russian Railways, the national railroad operator. On 7 September 2011, nearly the entire team perished in a plane crash. The team's flight to a game in Minsk crashed during takeoff, killing all of the team's roster (except forward Maxim Zyuzyakin, who was not on the flight), all coaching staff (except goaltending coach Jorma Valtonen, not on the flight) and four players from the Loko 9 juniors squad of the Minor Hockey League (MHL). Ruslan Albertovich Salei (Belarusian language, Belarusian: Руслан Альбертавіч Салей; Russian language, Russian: Руслан Альбертович Салей; November 2, 1974 – September 7, 2011) was a Belarusians, Belarusian professional ice hockey player. Salei played 14 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Detroit Red Wings, Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers and the Anaheim Ducks, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, the latter of which selected him ninth overall in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. Salei died on September 7, 2011, in the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash. A Yakovlev Yak-42 passenger aircraft, carrying almost the entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), crashed near Yaroslavl, Russia, en route to Minsk, Belarus, to start the 2011–12 KHL season. Oleksandr Yevhenovych "Alexander" Vyukhin (; January 9, 1973 – September 7, 2011) was a Ukrainian and Russian professional ice hockey goaltender who last played for Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He died in the 2011 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash outside of Yaroslavl, Russia. Playing career Vyukhin moved from Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg) to Ukraine as a junior where he would play in both Kharkiv and Kiev. He began his professional career in 1992 with Sokil Kyiv, then in the Russian Superleague. He played 19 seasons in Russia, with Avangard Omsk, Sibir Novosibirsk, Severstal Cherepovets, and Metallurg Novokuznetsk before being transferred to Lokomotiv Yaroslavl during the 2010–2011 season. Hockey Club Ambrì-Piotta is a Swiss professional ice hockey club and a member of the National League (NL). Stefan Daniel Patryk Liv (born Patryk Śliż; 21 December 1980 – 7 September 2011) was a Polish-born Swedish professional ice hockey player who played as a goaltender. Liv played professionally in Sweden, North America and Russia. Liv played nine seasons for HV71 in the top-tier league in Sweden. He was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2000 NHL entry draft and played one season elsewhere in the Red Wings organization, but never played in the National Hockey League (NHL). He then returned to Europe and HV71, where he played three seasons before moving to Russia in 2010. EHC Visp is a Switzerland, Swiss professional ice hockey team based in Visp and competing in the Swiss League (SL). The club was founded in 1939 and became Swiss champion in 1962.
