2011–12 West Coast Conference Women's Basketball Season
The 2011–12 West Coast Conference women's basketball season began with practices in October 2011 and ended with the West Coast Conference women's basketball tournament, 2012 West Coast Conference women's basketball tournament from February 29- March 5, 2012 at the Orleans Arena in Paradise, Nevada, Las Vegas. The regular season began on the weekend of November 11, with the conference schedule starting on December 29. This was the 27th season for WCC women's basketball, which began in the 1985–86 season when the league was known as the West Coast Athletic Conference (WCAC). It was also the 22nd season under the West Coast Conference name (the conference began as the California Basketball Association in 1952, became the WCAC in 1956, and dropped the word "Athletic" in 1989). Division I (NCAA)
NCAA Division I (D-I) is the highest division of intercollegiate athletics sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States, which accepts players globally. D-I schools include the major collegiate athletic powers, with large budgets, more elaborate facilities and more athletic scholarships than Division II and Division III as well as many smaller schools committed to the highest level of intercollegiate competition. This level was previously called the University Division of the NCAA, in contrast to the lower-level College Division; these terms were replaced with numeric divisions in 1973. Kelly Graves
Kelly Lee Graves (born January 14, 1963) is the current head women's basketball coach at the University of Oregon. Previously, Graves was the head women's basketball coach at Saint Mary's Gaels women's basketball, St. Mary's from 1997 to 2000, as well as Gonzaga Bulldogs women's basketball, Gonzaga University from 2000 to 2014. He was formerly an assistant coach for the Portland Pilots women's basketball, Portland Pilots (1994–1997) and St. Mary Gaels, where he later got his first head coaching stint with the Gaels from 1997 to 2000. From the 2004–05 season to the 2013–14 season, he guided Gonzaga to ten consecutive West Coast Conference regular season titles. 2012 Women's Basketball Invitational
The 2012 Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) was a single-elimination tournament of 16 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I teams that did not participate in the 2012 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament or 2012 Women's National Invitation Tournament. The 2012 bracket was announced on March 13, 2012. All games were hosted by the higher seed throughout the tournament, unless the higher seed's arena was unavailable. The championship game was hosted by the school with the higher end of the season RPI. 2012 Women's National Invitation Tournament
The 2012 Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) was a single-elimination tournament of 64 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I teams that did not participate in the 2012 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament. The tournament were played entirely on campus sites. The highest ranked team in each conference that did not receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament received an automatic bid to this tournament. The remaining slots were filled by the WNIT Selection Committee. The Oklahoma State Cowgirls won their first WNIT title, defeating the James Madison Dukes in the championship game, 75–68. Toni Young of Oklahoma State was named tournament MVP. 2012 NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 2012 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament began March 17 and concluded April 3, 2012. The Final Four was played at Pepsi Center in Denver. For only the second time in history, and the first time since 1989, all four of the number one seeds made it to the Final Four. Baylor won its second national championship, defeating Notre Dame 80–61 in the championship game. They were the only team to win 40 straight games in a season until Connecticut matched it in 2014. Jennifer Azzi
Jennifer Lynn Azzi ( ; born August 31, 1968), is an American business development officer and former basketball player and coach. Since 2021, she has been the chief business development officer for the Las Vegas Aces. Azzi played collegiate basketball at Stanford, where she was national player of the year and won the NCAA national championship in 1990. She played professional basketball from 1990-2003, including five seasons in the WNBA. She was the coach of the University of San Francisco women's basketball team from 2010-2016. Paul Bernard Thomas (born October 28, 1962) is an American college basketball coach who was most recently the women's basketball head coach at Saint Mary's Gaels women's basketball, Saint Mary's College of California. He previously served as head coach at Hamline University, Hamline and Cal Poly Pomona Broncos, Cal Poly Pomona. Originally from Creighton, Nebraska, Thomas graduated from Wayne State College in Nebraska and began his coaching career in 1985 as an assistant coach at Wayne State College and a local high school. Thomas had his first head coaching position from 1988 to 1990 at Hamline, a largely unsuccessful stint with only one win in two seasons.
