World Judo Championships
The World Judo Championships are the highest level of international judo competition, next to the quadrennial judo events at the Summer Olympic Games. The world championships are held by the International Judo Federation annually, except the calendar years of the Summer Olympics. Qualified judoka compete in their respective categories as representatives of their home countries. Team fixtures have also been held since 1994. The men's championships first took place in 1956, though the format and periodicity of the competition have changed over time. The last edition of the World Judo Championships (2024) was held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. History The first edition of the world championships took place in Tokyo, Japan in 1956. Euan Burton
Euan Michael Burton MBE (born 31 March 1979) is a Scottish judoka (a Judo practitioner). His best results include; 2010 World Championship bronze, 2010 Tokyo Grand Slam gold, and 2007 World Championship bronze. Biography Burton was born in Ascot, Berkshire but lives in Edinburgh, he was educated at Pencaitland Primary School, Ross High School and the University of Edinburgh. He was an Individual Bursar in 1998-99 at the University. Burton won the Scottish National Championship in 2000 before winning his first two championships of Great Britain, winning the half-middleweight division at the British Judo Championships in 2002 and 2003. Burton won a bronze medal at the 2007 World Judo Championships before representing Great Britain at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, competing in the men's 81 kg division and reaching the quarter finals. Daiki Kamikawa
is a Japanese judoka. He won the gold medal in the openweight division at the 2010 World Judo Championships by defeating Teddy Riner of France by a flags decision. Islam El Shehaby
Islam El Shehaby ( ''ʾIslām ash-Shahābī''; born 1 August 1982) is an Egyptian former judoka. El Shehaby competed at the 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016 Summer Olympics. El Shehaby was a nine-time African Champion (2002– 13), and was a world bronze medalist at the 2010 World Judo Championships. El Shehaby won five World Cup medals, and competitions in Abu Dhabi 2009, Düsseldorf 2010, Moscow 2010, Qingdao 2010, and Baku 2011. El Shehaby won silver at the 2016 Düsseldorf Grand Prix in the +100 kg category. Following controversy regarding his refusal to shake the hand of Israeli judoka Or Sasson, who defeated him at the 2016 Summer Olympics, El Shehaby retired in August 2016. Teddy Pierre-Marie Riner (, ; born 7 April 1989) is a French heavyweight judoka. An eleven-time world champion in the heavyweight (+100 kg) division, two-time openweight world champion and one-time world champion with the French men's team, he is the first and only judoka in history to win twelve gold medals at the World Judo Championships. Oreidis Despaigne Terry (born 20 September 1981) is a male judoka from Cuba, winner of the Pan American Games men's half heavyweight division at the 2007 Games. Hindrik Harmannus Arnoldus "Henk" Grol (born 14 April 1985 in Veendam) is a retired Dutch judoka. Judo career Grol competed in the 2007 European Judo Championships in Belgrade, Serbia in the men's under 90 kg, as a replacement for Mark Huizinga, who cancelled last minute due to personal problems. He won gold in the men's under 100-kilo class at the 2008 European Judo Championships in Lisbon, Portugal. He was the youngest European Champion of that year, only 22 years old. is a Japanese judoka. Anai began judo at the age of 5. Anai is Coached by former world champion and olympic silver medalist Shinichi Shinohara. Anai won the All-Japan Championships and took a bronze medal at the 2009 World Championships. His greatest achievement to date is winning the 2010 World Championships in Tokyo.
