2010 Qur'an-burning Controversy
In July 2010, Terry Jones, the pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, United States, announced plans to burn 200 copies of the Quran on the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The announcement attracted significant media attention and sparked international outrage, particularly throughout the Islamic world. Numerous world leaders urged Jones to cancel the event. His threat led to protests across the Middle East and Asia, resulting in at least 20 deaths. In early September 2010, Jones announced the event was cancelled and pledged not to burn the Quran. Terry Jones (born October 1951) is an American anti-Islamic right-wing activist, who was the pastor of Dove World Outreach Center, a small nondenominational Christian church located, until July 2013, in Gainesville, Florida. He is the president of a political group, Stand Up America Now. He first gained national and international attention in 2010 for his plan to burn Qur'ans, the scripture of the Islamic religion, on the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks and for burning the Qur'an afterward. 2011 Mazar-i-Sharif Attack
The 2011 Mazar-i-Sharif attack occurred on 1 April 2011 when a group of demonstrators attacked the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) compound in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, killing seven foreigners, including three United Nations staff members and four Nepalese guards. Additionally, five protesters died in the violence. Incident Antecedent The violence began as a protest against the burning of the Quran in the United States, overseen by an American pastor, Terry Jones, on 20 March 2011. Park51 (originally named Cordoba House) was a development originally envisioned as a 13-story Islamic community center and mosque in Lower Manhattan, New York City, United States. The developers hoped to promote interfaith dialogue. Quran desecration is the treatment of the Quran in a way that might be considered insulting. In Islamic law, believers must not damage the Quran and must perform a Ritual purification#Islam, ritual washing before touching it. Conversely, intentionally damaging copies is considered Islam and blasphemy, blasphemous in Islam. It is a point of controversy whether non-Muslims should be made to follow Islamic law, and a sensitive topic in international relations how it should be handled when Muslims demand adherence to Islamic Quranic practices by nonbelievers.
