2010 Georgian Local Elections
The 2010 Georgian local elections, ( ka, საქართველოს ადგილობრივი თვითმმართველობის ორგანოების არჩევნები) were held on 30 May 2010, to elect the councils of local government, ''sakrebulo'', and the Mayor of Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia (country), Georgia. Direct elections for Tbilisi mayor were held for the first time, with the United National Movement receiving 86.4% of the seats nationwide. Background In spring 2009, various opposition parties initiated anti-government protests, demanding Mikheil Saakashvili's resignation. During the rallies, Tbilisi Mayor Gigi Ugulava proposed that local elections be held in spring 2010, before the statutory deadline of fall 2010, and that the Tbilisi mayor be directly elected by voters. United National Movement (Georgia)
United National Movement (UNM; ka, ერთიანი ნაციონალური მოძრაობა, tr) also colloquially known as the Natsebi is a liberal conservative political party in Georgia. Tina Bokuchava serves as the party's chairman, while its honorary chairman Mikheil Saakashvili is considered the de facto leader. UNM's electoral number is 5. UNM was founded by Mikheil Saakashvili in 2001, in opposition to Eduard Shevardnadze's government, rising to power following the Rose Revolution in 2003. During its nine-year rule, UNM implemented several major reforms. The government focused on rooting out corruption and crime, establishing a free market economy, pursuing a pro-Western foreign policy, and regaining territorial integrity. The latter two put it in direct conflict with Russia exploding into a full-on war in 2008 that resulted in 20% of Georgia's territory being occupied by Russia to this day.
