:''This page describes the qualifying procedure for the 2010 European Men's Handball Championship.'' The 2010 European Men's Handball Championship qualification matches took place from October 2008 to June 2009. In a new format approved by the European Handball Federation (EHF), only Austria (host nation) and Denmark ( defending champion) qualified automatically for the final tournament, while all other national teams had to play the qualification round to reach the European Championship. Qualification system For the 2010 European Championship, a new qualification system was used for the first time, following its approval by the European Handball Federation (EHF) at its 9th extraordinary congress, in Lillehammer, Norway, on January 26, 2008. The 2010 EHF European Men's Handball Championship (9th tournament) was held in Austria from 19 to 31 January, in the cities of Vienna, Graz, Innsbruck, Linz and Wiener Neustadt. Bidding process The two bids were as follows: * Austria * Greece Outside of the two bids, the following bids were withdrawn: * Germany * Iceland * Croatia * Macedonia * Hungary On the 5 May 2006, in Vilamoura, Portugal, Austria was given the hosting rights for the first time ever. They were the first country since 1998 to host the tournament despite never qualifying on merit. Venues 5 Austrian cities have been selected to host the 2010 Championship. The venues in Linz, Graz and Wiener Neustadt were only used during the preliminary round. The fourth venue to be used in this round was located in Innsbruck, and was also one of the two venues in the main round. European Handball Federation
The European Handball Federation (EHF) is the umbrella organisation for European handball. Founded on 17 November 1991, it is made of 50 member federations and two associated federations (England and Scotland), and is headquartered in Vienna, Austria. History EHF was founded on 17 November 1991 in Berlin, Germany, although the first EHF Congress convened on 5 June 1992 and assigned EHF's headquarters to Vienna, Austria, from 1 September that year. In 2012, the EHF Office celebrated 20 years since it first opened its doors.
