2009 World Championships In Athletics – Women's Long Jump
The women's long jump at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Olympic Stadium on 21 and 23 August. In the final, Olympic champion Maurren Higa Maggi took the early lead as the first jumper in the competition. After three fouls, the second legal jump of the competition took Brittney Reese into the lead with a 6.92m. Tatyana Lebedeva's second round 6.97m put her into the lead for six jumps until Reese could take her third jump. Her season best tying settled the competition. No athlete improved over the final three rounds. In 2017, silver medalist Lebedeva's 2008 Olympic doping sample was retested and found positive for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (turinabol). Her Olympic medal was revoked. Ordinarily, a doping violation is followed by a two year ban which would include this championship. No changes in medals have been announced yet. Long Jump
The long jump is a track and field event in which athletes combine speed, strength and agility in an attempt to leap as far as possible from a takeoff point. Along with the triple jump, the two events that measure jumping for distance as a group are referred to as the "horizontal jumps". This event has a history in the ancient Olympic Games and has been a modern Olympic event for men since the first Olympics in 1896 and for women since 1948. Maurren Maggi
Maurren Higa Maggi (born 25 June 1976) is a Brazilian retired track and field athlete and Olympic gold medallist om the long jump. She is the South American record holder in the 100 metres hurdles and long jump, with 12.71 seconds and 7.26 metres respectively. She also has a best of 14.53 metres in the triple jump – a former South American record. She is the first Brazilian woman to win an Olympic gold medal in an individual sport. Maurren served a two-year ban from 2003 to 2004 for an unintentional anti-doping rule violation after testing positive for clostebol. Although the Brazil's Superior Sports Tribunal had cleared her of the violation, the IAAF appealed the decision and Maurren was issued with the sanction. Maggi won the gold medal in the women's long jump at the 2008 Beijing Olympics with a distance of 7.04m, becoming the first Brazilian woman to achieve an Olympic gold in an individual sport.
