The 2009 Women's Professional Soccer season served as the inaugural season for WPS, the top level professional women's soccer league in the United States. The regular season began on March 29 and ended on August 9, with the postseason being held between August 15 and 21. Women's Professional Soccer
Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) was the top-level professional women's soccer league in the United States. It began play on March 29, 2009. The league was composed of seven teams for its first two seasons and fielded six teams for the 2011 season, with continued plans for future expansion. The WPS was the highest level in the United States soccer pyramid for the women's game. On January 30, 2012, the league announced suspension of the 2012 season, citing several internal organization struggles as the primary cause. Some of these issues included an ongoing legal battle with magicJack owner Dan Borislow and the lack of resources invested into the league. Cristiane Rozeira de Souza Silva (born 15 May 1985), known as Cristiane (), is a Brazilian footballer who plays for Flamengo and the Brazilian women's national team. Keeley Kathleen Dowling (born February 17, 1983) is an American soccer defender, who is currently the head women's soccer coach at Colorado State University. Early life Born and raised in Carmel, Indiana, Dowling attended Carmel High School where she captained the soccer team to the state championship as a senior. She was named the 2000 Indiana Player of the Year the same year. Dowling earned Parade All-American honors and was named Hamilton County and Metro Player of the Year. is a Japanese former footballer who played for the Japan national team starting in 2003, and from 2012 to 2016 served as captain of the team. Tiffeny Carleen Milbrett (born October 23, 1972) is an American former professional soccer forward who was a longtime member of the United States women's national team. In May 2018 the National Soccer Hall of Fame announced Milbrett will be enshrined in the Hall.
