2009 Patriot League Men's Basketball Tournament
The 2009 Patriot League men's basketball tournament, a part of the 2008-09 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, took place March 4, 2009, as a single-elimination tournament, with games being played at the higher seeds' home courts. The American University Eagles won the league's regular season, and received the number one seed in the tournament. The higher seed in each match-up was the host team for each game. The Eagles became the seventh team to repeat as Patriot League champions when they beat the second seeded Holy Cross Crusaders 73–57 in the championship game, which was broadcast live on ESPN2. The 2008–09 American Eagles men's basketball team represented American University during the 2008–09 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Eagles, led by head coach Jeff Jones, played their home games at Bender Arena and were members of the Patriot League. They finished the season 24–8, 13–1 in Patriot League play to finish first in the conference regular season standings. They were champions of the Patriot League tournament to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament – the school's second straight appearance – where they lost in the first round to Villanova. Jeff Jones (basketball Coach)
Jeffrey Allen Jones (born June 29, 1960) is an American college basketball coach and currently the head coach of the Old Dominion University basketball team. Jones took the helm of Old Dominion basketball on April 3, 2013. He previously served as head coach of the American Eagles and the Virginia Cavaliers. Playing career High school Jones graduated from Apollo High School in Owensboro, Kentucky. He was inducted into the Apollo High School Hall of Fame. His father, Bob, is a former coach of Kentucky Wesleyan, which he led to the 1973 NCAA College Division title. College He played point guard at the University of Virginia from 1978 to 1982. As a four-year starter at Virginia, Jones was known as a leader and prolific passer. A single-elimination, knockout, or sudden death tournament is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of each match-up is immediately eliminated from the tournament. Each winner will play another in the next round, until the final match-up, whose winner becomes the tournament champion. Lafayette Leopards
The Lafayette Leopards represent the 23 Division I varsity athletic teams of Lafayette College and compete in the Patriot League. There are 11 men's teams, 11 women's teams, and one co-ed team. The club teams also compete as the Leopards. Though not a varsity sport, crew and ice hockey are very competitive at Lafayette and play in intercollegiate club leagues. Lafayette's primary rival in every sport is the Lehigh Mountain Hawks of nearby Lehigh University. The Lehigh Mountain Hawks are the athletic teams representing Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The Hawks participate in NCAA Division I competition as a member of the Patriot League. The Army Black Knights men's basketball team represents the United States Military Academy in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college basketball. Army currently competes as a member of the Patriot League and plays its home games at Christl Arena in West Point, New York.
