Backstroke
Backstroke or back crawl is one of the four Swimming (sport), swimming styles used in competitive events regulated by FINA, and the only one of these styles swum on the back. This swimming style has the advantage of easy breathing, but the disadvantage of swimmers not being able to see where they are going. It also has a different start from the other three competition swimming styles. The swimming style is similar to an ''upside down'' front crawl or freestyle. Both backstroke and front crawl are long-axis strokes. In individual medley backstroke is the second style swum; in the medley relay it is the first style swum. History Backstroke is an ancient style of swimming, popularized by Harry Hebner. It was the second stroke to be swum in competitions after the front crawl. Heather Frederiksen
Heather Frederiksen Order of the British Empire, MBE (born 30 December 1985) is a retired British Paralympic swimmer. She is former world record holder in the women's S8 100 m backstroke, 50 m freestyle, 100 m freestyle, 200 m freestyle and 400 m freestyle events. , she still holds European records in the S8 200 m and 400 m freestyle. Frederiksen is a two time Paralympic Games, Paralympic champion in the 100m backstroke S8 (classification), S8 classification, and has won eight Paralympic medals in all. Early life and education Frederiksen was born in Leigh, Greater Manchester, Leigh, England. She attended the Lowton Church of England High School for secondary school. Marlou Van Der Kulk
Marlou van der Kulk (born 9 September 1993) is a Dutch Paralympic swimmer. She competed in the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, winning two bronze medals. Van der Kulk has also competed in two IPC Swimming World Championships winning four gold medals. Career history Van der Kulk was born on 9 September 1993 in Huizen, Netherlands. She started swimming at the age of 12, and began competitive swimming while still in high school. Classified as an S14 swimmer, for athletes with an intellectual impairment, she was part of the Netherlands team chosen to compete on home soil at Eindhoven for the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships. S14, SB14, SM14 are para-swimming classifications used for categorising swimmers based on their level of disability. Definition This classification is for people with intellectual disabilities. History The classification was created by the International Paralympic Committee. In 2003 the committee approved a plan which recommended the development of a universal classification code. The code was approved in 2007, and defines the "objective of classification as developing and implementing accurate, reliable and consistent sport focused classification systems", which are known as "evidence based, sport specific classification".
