2008–09 New York Islanders Season
The 2008–09 New York Islanders season was the 37th season in franchise history. On April 14, 2009, the Islanders won the NHL draft lottery to receive the first overall draft pick in the 2009 NHL entry draft. Eastern Conference (NHL)
The Eastern Conference () is one of two conferences in the National Hockey League (NHL) used to divide teams. Its counterpart is the Western Conference (NHL), Western Conference. History Originally named the Prince of Wales Conference (or Wales Conference for short), it was created in 1974–75 NHL season, 1974 when the NHL realigned its teams into two conferences and four divisions. Because the new conferences and divisions had little to do with North American geography, geographical references were removed. The Prince of Wales Trophy dates back to 1925, when it was donated to the League by the Prince of Wales, who later became Edward VIII, King Edward VIII and then the Duke of Windsor. The New York Islanders are a professional ice hockey team based in Elmont, New York. They compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) Eastern Conference's Metropolitan Division. Since their inaugural season in 1972, the team has played home games at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum (1972–2015, 2018–2021), Barclays Center (2015–2020) and currently play at UBS Arena (since 2021). In forty-nine completed seasons, the team has won the Stanley Cup championship four times and has qualified for the playoffs twenty-seven times. The New York Islanders (colloquially known as the Isles) are a professional ice hockey team based in Elmont, New York. Andy Sutton
Andrew Cameron Sutton (born March 10, 1975) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He has previously played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Edmonton Oilers, San Jose Sharks, Minnesota Wild, Atlanta Thrashers, New York Islanders, Ottawa Senators and Anaheim Ducks in a 14-year career. Playing career Minor/Collegiate Sutton was born in London, Ontario, and played most of his youth hockey with the Greater London Hockey Association and the rep London Sabres AAA program. At the age of 14, Sutton moved with his family to Kingston, Ontario. He played Junior "B" hockey in Gananoque, Ontario, at age 16, later playing in the Metro Toronto Junior Hockey League for St. Mike's B's. Joshua Bailey (born October 2, 1989) is a Canadian professional ice hockey winger who is an unrestricted free agent. He has played 15 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the New York Islanders, who selected him ninth overall in the 2008 NHL entry draft. Early life Bailey was born on October 2, 1989, in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada to Chris and Donna Bailey. Jonathan Sim (born September 29, 1977) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey left winger who played in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the third round (70th overall) of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. Playing career As a veteran journeyman of the National Hockey League, Sim moved to play his first full professional season in Europe in 2011–12. Mitch Fritz (born November 24, 1980) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey forward who played 20 games in the National Hockey League's 2008–09 season for the New York Islanders. Fritz was born in Osoyoos, British Columbia. Playing career Fritz made his NHL debut against the Philadelphia Flyers on October 30, 2008. He is a noted enforcer, regularly accumulating a high amount of penalty minutes and fighting majors each season. In 2005–2006, Fritz was awarded the AHL Man of the Year award for outstanding service in the Springfield community, while playing for the American Hockey League's Springfield Falcons. Thomas Brett Skinner (born June 28, 1983) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman and current head coach of the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League (USHL). 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs
The 2009 Stanley Cup playoffs of the National Hockey League began on April 15, 2009, after the 2008–09 regular season. The sixteen teams that qualified, eight from each conference (the winner of each of the three divisions plus the five teams with highest point totals from the teams remaining), played a best-of-seven series for the conference quarterfinals, semifinals, and championships, and then the conference champions played a best-of-seven series for the Stanley Cup. The Columbus Blue Jackets made their first appearance in the playoffs in their nine-year history. Previously they had been the only franchise never to have made the playoffs. Also, home teams set a record by going 13–2 in the openers of all the series combined.
