2008–09 Maltese FA Trophy
The 2008–09 Maltese FA Trophy was the 71st season since its establishment. It features 20 teams from Maltese Premier League and First Division. The competition started on 25 October 2008 and ended on 30 May 2009 with the Final. Birkirkara were the defending champions, but were eliminated in the semi-finals by Valletta. Results When the draw was conducted four teams received a bye to the Quarterfinals. Birkirkara received a bye because they won the 2007–08 Maltese FA Trophy. Other three teams qualifying directly to the Quarterfinals are Valletta, Marsaxlokk and Sliema Wanderers, for being (except Birkirkara) three best-placed teams in last year's Premier League. Birkirkara F
Birkirkara (abbreviated as B'Kara or BKR) is a city in the Eastern Region of Malta. It is the second most populous on the island, with 24,356 inhabitants as of 2020. The town consists of five autonomous parishes: Saint Helen, Saint Joseph the Worker, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Saint Mary and San Gorg Preca. The city's motto is ''In hoc signo vinces'', and its coat of arms is a plain red cross, surmounted by a crown. Etymology ''Birkirkara'' means "cold water" or "running water". This is attributed to the valley in the town. Originally, the name was written as ''Birchircara'', as influenced by Italian spelling which traditionally does not use the letter 'K'. Dingli Swallows F
Dingli () is a village in the Western Region of Malta, with a population of 3,865 as of 2021. It is from the capital Valletta and two kilometers () from the nearest town, Rabat. The village lies on a plateau some 230 metres above sea level, near the highest point of Malta. The area provides not only open sea views over the tiny, uninhabited isle of Filfla, but is also a good vantage point over Malta. The cliffs offer views of the nearby Buskett Gardens and Verdala Palace. Malta Football Association
The Malta Football Association (MFA; ) is the governing body of football (soccer), football in Malta. The Association organises the Maltese Football League for both men and women and several other competitions, including knockout competitions for the top teams for both genders. The Malta national football team, men's national team, Malta women's national football team, women's national team, as well as several youth representative teams compete regularly in international competitions organised by UEFA and FIFA. These include the European Championships and the World Cup. Malta also compete in the UEFA Futsal Championship, though not the UEFA Women's Futsal Championship to date. Hamrun ( ) is a town in the Southern Region, Malta, Southern Region of Malta, with a population of 9,244 as of March 2014. The people The townspeople are traditionally known as ''Tas-Sikkina'' (literally meaning 'of the knife' or 'those who carry a knife') or as ''Ta' Werwer'' (which literally means 'those who scare' or more colloquially, 'the scary ones'). This appellation could stem from the fact that a considerable number of used to work as stevedores on the docks and thus carried a knife at all times. Another theory was that the community of Sicilians who settled here illegally in the 16th century danced a traditional dance which involved the wielding of small stilettos which they carried in their socks, waving them in the air and back to their sheaths. Victor Tedesco Stadium
The Victor Tedesco Stadium is a stadium in Hamrun, Malta. It opened in 1996. It has a capacity of 6,000, with 1,800 seated. It is the home ground of Maltese football club Ħamrun Spartans F.C., Ħamrun Spartans, who currently play in the Maltese Premier League. It is used for matches from the Maltese Premier League, the Maltese First Division, and some games from the Maltese Second Division. It is also used by all the Ħamrun Spartans teams from the youth teams to the senior teams for training. The stadium also has a bar, underground dressing rooms, some offices, and a five-a-side pitch next door. On 4 June 2010 rugby league was played at the ground. Ivan Woods
Ivan Woods (born 31 December 1976) is a former professional footballer. Born in Canada, he represented the Malta national team. Playing career Valletta Woods began his career playing for Attard, but following some impressive displays he was signed by Valletta for the 1994–95 season. Woods made seven appearances in his debut season for Valletta, but failed to score any goals, as Valletta finished in third position in the Maltese Premier League. Woods began the 1995–96 season with Valletta, hoping to force his way into the first team squad. During the season, he made 11 appearances, and scored two goals, to help his team to a second-place finish in the Maltese Premier League. The Maltese Premier League 2008–09 was the 94th season of the Maltese Premier League, the top-tier association football competition in Malta. It began on 23 August 2008 with a scoreless draw between Floriana and Hamrun Spartans; and ended on 24 May 2009. The first goal in the season was scored by Ivan, who played for Qormi. Hibernians were crowned champions on 23 May 2009, surpassing rivals Valletta by two points and winning their tenth title. Qormi (, , ), also known by its title Città Pinto, is a city in the Southern Region of Malta, southwest of Valletta in the centre of the island. It has a population of 16,324 (as of March 2018), making it Malta's fifth-largest city. Qormi has two parishes, one dedicated to Saint George and one to Saint Sebastian. It contains two valleys: Wied ''il-Kbir'' (The Large Valley) and ''Wied is-Sewda'' (Black Valley). Msida (, ) is a harbour town in the Eastern Region of Malta with a population of 7,623 (2021). Location The town is located just west of Valletta on the northeast coast of Malta.
