2008–09 Elitserien (men's Handball) ...
The 2008–09 Elitserien was the 75th season of the top division of Swedish handball. 14 teams competed in the league. The eight highest placed teams qualified for the playoffs, whereas teams 11–12 had to play relegation playoffs against teams from the second division, and teams 13–14 were relegated automatically. IK Sävehof won the regular season, but Alingsås HK won the playoffs and claimed their first Swedish title. Handbollsligan ''(literally, "The Handball league")'' is the highest league in the league system of Swedish handball, and comprises the top 14 Swedish handball teams. The first season began in 1931–32. The season ends with a playoff. Structure The season starts in September with a regular season comprising 14 teams meeting each other twice. A total of 26 rounds. The eight best teams after the regular season qualifies for the play-off. The 14th team is relegated, and the 11th, 12th and 13th team plays matches against the second, third and fourth from Allsvenskan to qualify for next season's Handbollsligan. The season ends with the finals in the beginning of May and the winning team qualifies directly to EHF European League and the losing team qualifies for the EHF European Cup. H 43 Lund
H43 Lund is a handball team from Sweden. The club played in the Elitserien but after bankruptcy in 2014 they no longer exist. The youth club under the same name is a new club founded in 2015 under same short name (but not same full name) The club was founded in 1943 in a school class in Lund. Their teacher Y. Wallmer helped the boys found the club at a local café. 13 years later the club was playing in Sweden's highest division. H43 Lund played in "allsvenskan" for 14 years 1956-1970 before they were relegated to the second division. After nine years they were back in the top division but now only for seven years. In 2000 H43 Lund was back in "Elitserien" and stayed there for 12 years. During 2012/13 H43 played one year in division 2 but then came back. Economic bankruptcy in 2014 ended the history of the club. IFK Ystad HK
IFK Ystad HK is a Swedish handball club based in Ystad, founded in 1927. History The club won promotion to the top division, at the time known as Allsvenskan, in 1941, but were relegated after one season. They did not return until 1997, when the league had been renamed Elitserien. In 1998–99, IFK Ystad finished 7th in the autumn season and qualified for the spring season of Elitserien. They finished last (8th) in the spring league, but still qualified for the premilinary round of the playoffs. They eliminated Lugi HF in the preliminary round, but were defeated by HK Drott in the quarterfinals. In 1999–2000, the club finished 7th in the spring Elitserien and lost against Alingsås HK in the playoffs preliminary round. In the following season they improved to 4th and qualified directly for the quarterfinals, where they were eliminated by IFK Skövde. HK Drott Halmstad
HK Drott Halmstad is a handball club, based in Halmstad, Sweden. The club has won the Swedish Championship eleven times, last in 2013. Together with Redbergslids IK, HK Drott have dominated Swedish handball between 1984 and 2003. This club has had many famous players, among them Magnus Andersson, Ola Lindgren, Bengt Johansson and Göran Bengtsson. History The founding HK Drott was founded on 10 March 1936 by Lars-Erik Dymne, Erik Månsson, Arvid Fridh and Ingvar Svensson, all 13 years of age; the club was originally formed as a football club. Ystads IF is a professional handball club from Ystad, Sweden. They play in Handbollsligan. They won the Swedish Championship in 1976, 1992, 2022 and 2025. History 1908-1960 Ystads IF was founded in 1908 and took up handball on the programme in 1929. In 1933–34, the club won an unofficial six-team league consisting of teams from the cities of Ystad and Kristianstad. In the same season, they made their debut in Svenska mästerskapet (SM), a tournament held to determine the Swedish Champions. They were eliminated by Flottans IF Karlskrona in their first match. Eskilstuna Guif IF, commonly known as Eskilstuna Guif or Guif, is a handball club based in Eskilstuna, Sweden. It has reached the national championship finals on four occasions but never won and currently competes in Handbollsligan, the top domestic handball league. History The club was founded on 26 May 1896 as ''Godtemplarnas Ungdoms- och Idrottsförening'' (). GUIF was one of the first sports clubs in Eskilstuna after Eskilstuna GAK. Overtime (sports)
Overtime (OT) or extra time (ET) is an additional period of play to bring a game to a decision and avoid declaring the match a tie or draw where the scores are the same. In some sports, this extra period is played only if the game is required to have a clear winner, as in single-elimination tournaments where only one team or players can advance to the next round or win the tournament and replays are not allowed.
