2008 Wimbledon Championships – Women's Singles
Defending champion Venus Williams defeated her sister Serena Williams in the final, 7–5, 6–4 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 2008 Wimbledon Championships. It was her fifth Wimbledon title and seventh and last major singles title overall. She did not lose a set during the tournament, the second time she did so at a major. Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Janković, Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova were in contention for the world No. 1 singles ranking. Ivanovic retained the top ranking despite losing in the third round to Zheng Jie. Janković, Sharapova and Kuznetsova also lost in the first four rounds, marking the first time in history that none of the top four seeds advanced to the quarterfinals. Venus Ebony Starr Williams (born June 17, 1980) is an American inactive tennis player. She has been ranked as the List of WTA number 1 ranked singles tennis players, world No. 1 in women's singles by the Women's Tennis Association, WTA for 11 weeks, and as the List of WTA number 1 ranked doubles tennis players, world No. 1 in women's doubles for eight weeks. Anna Chakvetadze
Anna Djambuliovna Chakvetadze ( ; born 5 March 1987) is a Russian former professional tennis player. In her career, Chakvetadze won eight WTA Tour singles titles. She reached her highest singles ranking of world No. 5 in September 2007, after reaching the US Open semifinals. She also made the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and French Open that same year. She announced her retirement on 11 September 2013, due to a persisting back injury. She is currently a commentator on the Eurosport channel. Francesca Schiavone
Francesca Schiavone (; born 23 June 1980) is an Italian former professional tennis player. She had career-high rankings of world No. 4 in women's singles and No. 8 in women's doubles by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). Schiavone won eight WTA Tour-level singles titles, including a major at the 2010 French Open, the first Italian woman to win a singles major. To date, Schiavone is the last one-handed backhand player to win a major women's title. Schiavone was also runner-up in singles at the 2011 French Open and in women's doubles at the 2008 French Open. Nicole Vaidišová Štěpánková (; born 23 April 1989) is a Czech former professional tennis player. Vaidišová is an Australian Open and French Open semifinalist as well as a two-time quarterfinalist at Wimbledon. She started playing tennis when she was six years old, enrolling to train at Nick Bollettieri's tennis academy in Bradenton, Florida. Her serve was considered her biggest weapon. Ágnes Szávay (, ; born 29 December 1988) is a former professional tennis player from Hungary. The 2007 WTA Newcomer of the Year achieved her career-high ranking of world No. 13 in April 2008.
