2008 OFC Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament
The second OFC Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament in 2008 determined the Oceania Football Confederation's berth for the 2008 Beijing Olympic football tournament. First stage Nine women's teams participated in the first stage, held as the 2007 South Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa. from August 25 to September 7. The winning team, Papua New Guinea, progressed to the second round to play New Zealand. The OFC Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament is an association football tournament held once in four years to decide the only qualification spot of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) and representatives at the Olympic Games. The tournament was first held in 2004. The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) is one of the six continental confederations of international association football. The OFC has 13 members, 11 of which are full members and two which are associate members not affiliated with FIFA. It promotes the game in Oceania and allows the member nations to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. OFC is predominantly made up of island nations where association football is not the most popular sport, with low GDP and low population meaning very little money is generated by the OFC nations. Football at the 2008 Summer Olympics was held in Beijing and several other cities in the People's Republic of China from 6 to 23 August. Associations affiliated with FIFA were invited to send their full women's national teams and men's U-23 teams to participate. Men's teams were allowed to augment their squad with three players over the age of 23. For these games, the men competed in a 16-team tournament, and the women in a 12-team tournament.
