2007 CDS – People's Party Leadership Election
The 2007 CDS – People's Party leadership election was held on 21 April 2007. The incumbent leader since 2005, José Ribeiro e Castro, faced former leader and his predecessor Paulo Portas, who requested a leadership election looking to return to the party's leadership just 2 years after his resignation following the 2005 Portuguese legislative election, 2005 legislative election. Paulo Portas won the election by a landslide, returning to his former post as leader of the CDS – People's Party and later contesting the 2009 Portuguese legislative election, 2009 legislative election. Elections in Portugal are free, fair, and regularly held, in accordance with election law. Only the elections since the Carnation Revolution of 1974 are listed here. During the period encompassing the Constitutional Monarchy and the First Republic there were also elections, but only for a limited universe of voters. During the Estado Novo regime, from 1926 to 1974, the few elections held were not up to the democratic standards of their time and never resulted in power transfer. Paulo de Sacadura Cabral Portas (born 12 September 1962, ) is a Portuguese media and political figure, who has, since the 1990s, been one of Portugal's leading conservative politicians.
