2003–04 Atlético Madrid Season
The 2003–04 season was the 98th season in Atlético Madrid's history and their 67rd season in La Liga, the top division of Spanish football. It covers a period from 1 July 2003 to 30 June 2004. The season saw Fernando Torres taking another step towards superstardom, scoring 19 goals in the season during which he turned 20 years, which led to a call-up to the Spain national football team, Spain national team for UEFA Euro 2004. The finish was still not enough to satisfy the owner family Gil, resulting in coach Gregorio Manzano unexpectedly getting the sack. Juanma (footballer, Born 1980)
Juan Manuel Barrero Barrero (born 27 June 1980), known as Juanma, is a Spanish retired footballer who played as a goalkeeper, and is the current manager of SD Tarazona. He spent most of his 16-year professional career in the Spanish lower leagues. He appeared in 38 La Liga games over three seasons, with Atlético Madrid and Numancia. Club career Juanma was born in Badajoz, Extremadura. After beginning with local side Mérida UD, he moved in 2002 to Atlético Madrid, starting out at their reserves. He played twice with the first team in his first season, then 11 times in the 2003–04 campaign as all goalkeepers (himself, Germán Burgos and Sergio Aragoneses) appeared in roughly the same matches and they eventually qualified for the UEFA Intertoto Cup. Diego Simeone
Diego Pablo Simeone González (; ; born 28 April 1970), nicknamed "El Cholo" (), is an Argentine professional football manager and former player who played as a defender. He has been the manager of club Atlético Madrid since December 2011 making him the second longest serving manager in Europe currently. In his club career that started in 1987, Simeone played in Argentina, Italy, and Spain for Vélez Sarsfield, Pisa, Sevilla, Atlético Madrid, Inter Milan, Lazio and Racing Club. Rubén Ariel Olivera da Rosa (born 4 May 1983 in Montevideo) is a Uruguayan former footballer who played as a midfielder, and current coach. A versatile player, he is capable of playing anywhere in midfield and throughout his career he has been deployed as a left or right winger, as a central midfielder, as an attacking midfielder, and even as a forward. Jorge Larena-Avellaneda Roig (born 29 September 1981), known as Larena, is a Spanish former professional footballer who played usually as an attacking midfielder. He played 193 La Liga matches over seven seasons (15 goals), in representation of three teams, mainly Las Palmas for which he also appeared in the Segunda División. Kizito Musampa (born 20 July 1977) is a former professional footballer who played as a left winger. Musampa had a journeyman career, taking in notable spells at AFC Ajax, Bordeaux, Malaga CF, Atlético Madrid and Manchester City. Gaspar Gálvez Burgos (born 7 July 1979) is a Spanish former professional footballer who played as a defender, and the manager of Córdoba CF B. He started his career with Atlético Madrid, and went on amass La Liga totals of 156 games and one goal during eight seasons, also representing in the competition Oviedo, Valladolid, Albacete and Alavés. Sergi Barjuán Esclusa (born 28 December 1971), known simply as Sergi as a player, is a Spanish former professional footballer who played as a left-back, currently a manager. Santiago Denia Sánchez (born 9 March 1974), commonly known as Santi, is a Spanish retired footballer who played as a central defender, currently manager of the Spain under-21 national team. He appeared in 297 La Liga matches over 11 seasons (eight goals scored), with Albacete and Atlético Madrid. He won the 1996 league championship with the latter club.
