Serena Williams defeated Justine Henin in the final, 7–6(8–6), 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2002 Italian Open. It was her third title of the season (and the 14th of her career), and her first clay court title. Jelena Dokic was the defending champion, but lost in third round to Anastasia Myskina. Francesca Schiavone (; born 23 June 1980) is an Italian former professional tennis player. She had career-high rankings of world No. 4 in women's singles and No. 8 in women's doubles by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). Schiavone won eight WTA Tour-level singles titles, including a major at the 2010 French Open, the first Italian woman to win a singles major. Anne Kremer (born 17 October 1975) is a Luxembourgish retired tennis player. She won two singles titles on the WTA Tour. On 29 July 2002, she achieved her best WTA ranking of world No. 18. Kremer completed her schooling at the Athénée de Luxembourg and subsequently studied English and history at Stanford University in California.
