2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup
The 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup was the sixth edition of the Gold Cup, the soccer championship of North America, Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF). The tournament was once again held in the United States, in Miami and Pasadena. The format of the tournament stayed the same as in 2000: twelve teams were split into four groups of three. The top two teams in each group would advance to the quarterfinals. Ecuador and South Korea were invited from outside CONCACAF. Canada, who rode the coin toss all the way to winning the 2000 Cup, needed luck once again, as all games in Group D ended with a 2-0 result. Lots were drawn, with Canada and Haiti moving on to the next round; Ecuador did not. But the Canadian team's luck ran dry in the semifinals, as the U.S. beat them on penalties after tying 0-0. Jorge Humberto Rodríguez Alvárez (born 20 May 1971 in San Alejo, El Salvador) is a Salvadoran former professional footballer and currently manager. He was one of the mainstays of the El Salvador national football team during the second half of the 1990s. Gustavo Adolfo Cabrera Marroquín (born 13 December 1979 in Santo Tomás, Guatemala) is a former Guatemalan football defender who last played for Deportivo Marquense in the Liga Nacional de Guatemala and was also a member of the Guatemala national team. On 12 September 2012 he was banned from play for life due to allegations of match-fixing. Luis Arturo Swisher Salguero (born 21 June 1978) is a former Guatemalan football defender. Club career Swisher started his professional career with Aurora F.C. making his debut with the club in 1997. He then played for some other local teams before he joined Polish side Polonia Warszawa from CD Suchitepéquez in June 2005, after several exceptional years in Guatemala. He lasted only one season in Europe and returned to Suchitepéquez only to play for four different teams in the next four seasons. After joining Petapa in 2009 he moved to USAC before the 2009–2010 season. Edgar Eladio Estrada Solís (born November 16, 1967), popularly known as "El Gato" (The Cat), is a Guatemalan footballer who has played goalkeeper for several clubs in Guatemala's top division. He was capped 71 times for the Guatemala national football team. Club career "El Gato" started his professional career at Aurora F.C., winning the domestic league title in the 1992-93 season. Julio César "''El Pocho''" Cortés Lagos (born 29 March 1941) is an Uruguayan football coach and former midfielder who participated in three World Cups with the Uruguay national team. Juan José Gómez (born November 8, 1980 in San Miguel, El Salvador) is a Salvadoran retired professional goalkeeper. He is currently working as part of a sports narration staff for the private sports channel Tigo Sports based in El Salvador.
