2001–02 Portland Trail Blazers Season
The 2001–02 NBA season was the 32nd season for the Portland Trail Blazers in the National Basketball Association. During the off-season, head coach Mike Dunleavy was fired after four years and two trips to the Western Conference Finals, and was replaced with Maurice Cheeks, as the Trail Blazers acquired Derek Anderson and Steve Kerr from the San Antonio Spurs, signed free agent Ruben Patterson, and re-signed former Trail Blazers center Chris Dudley; Kerr would reunite with his former teammate of the Chicago Bulls, former All-Star forward Scottie Pippen, where they won three championships in the late 1990s. Maurice Cheeks
Maurice Edward Cheeks (born September 8, 1956) is an American professional basketball coach and former player who serves as assistant coach for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He has also served as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Detroit Pistons. Cheeks was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 2018. He was the first player with 2,000 steals solely in the NBA. Early life and college Cheeks was born in Chicago on September 8, 1956, and grew up in the Robert Taylor Homes. He attended DuSable High School. He only had significant playing time on the basketball team in his senior year. The Chicago Bulls are an American professional basketball team based in Chicago. The Bulls compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Central Division of the Eastern Conference. 2002–03 Orlando Magic Season
The 2002–03 NBA season was the 14th season for the Orlando Magic in the National Basketball Association. During the off-season, the Magic signed free agent All-Star forward Shawn Kemp. However, Grant Hill only played just 29 games due to his continuing ankle injuries, and Horace Grant only played just five games with a sore left knee, and was released to free agency after feuding with head coach Doc Rivers. At midseason, the Magic traded Mike Miller to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for rookies Drew Gooden and Gordan Giriček. Shawn Kemp
Shawn Travis Kemp Sr. (born November 26, 1969) is an American former professional basketball player who played for the Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Portland Trail Blazers, and Orlando Magic in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Nicknamed "Reign Man", he was a six-time NBA All-Star and a three-time All-NBA Second Team member. Kemp is widely regarded as one of the best Slam Dunkers of all time and made the 1996 NBA Finals with the Supersonics. 2002 NBA Finals
The 2002 NBA Finals was the championship series of the National Basketball Association's (NBA) 2001–02 season, and the culmination of the season's playoffs. The best-of-seven playoff was contested between the Western Conference champion Los Angeles Lakers (who were also two-time defending NBA champion), and the Eastern Conference champion New Jersey Nets. The 2001–02 New Jersey Nets season was the Nets' 35th season in the National Basketball Association, and 26th season in East Rutherford, New Jersey. This season is notable for the Nets acquiring All-Star point guard Jason Kidd from the Phoenix Suns during the off-season. The team selected Eddie Griffin out of Seton Hall University with the seventh overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft, but soon traded him to the Houston Rockets in exchange for top draft pick Richard Jefferson from the University of Arizona, and rookie center Jason Collins out of Stanford University, and signed free agent Todd MacCulloch. The 2001 NBA playoffs was the postseason tournament of the National Basketball Association's 2000-01 season. The tournament concluded with the Western Conference champion Los Angeles Lakers defeating the Eastern Conference champion Philadelphia 76ers 4 games to 1. Elliott Lydell "Dale" Davis (born March 25, 1969) is an American former professional basketball player who played center and power forward. Career Davis was drafted by the Indiana Pacers with the 13th pick of the 1991 NBA draft and spent the first nine years of his career with them. Rasheed Abdul Wallace (born September 17, 1974) is an American basketball coach and former professional player. A native of Philadelphia, Wallace played college basketball for the North Carolina Tar Heels before declaring for the draft in 1995. He played 16 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
